BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs baseball team was able to finish off their sweep of Gaffney this week with a 10-2 victory over the Indians at home on Friday night, that was led by a strong pitching performance from junior Jackson Cole.
The win on Friday night finished off a sweep that started with a 5-0 victory on Monday night, in which Bulldogs pitcher Tristan Smith struck out 17, and a 18-13 victory at Gaffney on Wednesday night that saw the Bulldogs score nine runs in the final inning to come away with the victory. "Tonight was a great way to finish out the series and it started with a great pitching effort from Jackson Cole," said Bulldogs head coach Jeff Lipscomb. "He was pretty dominant on the mound tonight and we were able to get some runs for him early, it was just a great game overall." Jackson Cole started out his impressive night by striking out the first batter he faced as he went six innings while striking out seven batters and only allowing one run. In the bottom of the first inning with one out Bulldogs catcher Hudson Wilson reached base on a Gaffney error before Richie Lewis, who ran for Wilson, advanced to third base on ground rule double by Tristan Smith down the left field line before scoring on a Gaffney wild pitch to give Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead. Luke Compton started the bottom of the third inning for the Bulldogs by reaching base on a single before stealing second base and third base before putting the Bulldogs ahead 2-0 when Hudson Wilson hit a single down the third base line. Richie Lewis, who was running for Wilson, stole second base with no throw before advancing to third base on a wild pitch and eventually made the Bulldogs lead 3-0 when he scored on another Gaffney wild pitch. Bulldogs third baseman Davis Starnes reached third base after getting a base hit and advancing to third base on a wild pitch but made the Bulldogs lead 4-0 when he scored on a sacrifice bunt by Corben Childers. In the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs, Luke Compton got the scoring going again for the Bulldogs as he hit a double to the base of the centerfield wall before stealing third base and making the score 5-0 on a Hudson Wilson hit up the middle. Boiling Springs had their biggest offensive output of the night in the bottom of the sixth inning as they saw five runners score including Andrew Coley, Jackson Reel, Luke Compton, and Davis Starnes to put the Bulldogs ahead 10-1 heading into the final inning. Ashton Smith came on to pitch for the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh inning striking out three Gaffney hitters and sealing the victory for Boiling Springs. With the victory the Bulldogs now sits with a 4-2 record in region play as they head into a stretch that will see them play four of their final six region games in the Fort Mill area of the state. Lipscomb knows the travel will be a hurdle for his team but says they'll be ready for the challenge. "We have to take the next six games one at a time," said Lipscomb. "After a two hour drive we have to get our legs back under us and just relax when we get there. We have to just enjoy the game and try to play some steady baseball from here on out." Boiling Springs will start their final two weeks of region baseball on Monday as they travel to Fort Mill before hosting the Yellow Jackets at home on Wednesday. Comments are closed.
