INMAN, SC - The Boiling Springs baseball team stayed undefeated in an unconventional way on Saturday during the second day of the Steve Sanders Tournament, as part of the Bill Metcalf bracket that was being hosted at Chapman High School.
The unconventional part of the Bulldogs day came in their first game of the day as they faced off against a team they have a lot of recent history with, the Hillcrest Rams. Boiling Springs took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning as they took a 3-0 lead as Brent Fowler batted in two runs and Luke Compton drove in another run of his own. Hillcrest responded in the top half of the inning with three runs of their own to tie the game at 3-3, with only two runs being earned runs. Tristan Smith started the game for the Bulldogs going three innings while striking out seven Hillcrest batters. Jackson Kostiuk and Jackson Cole came on to pitch three innings of scoreless relief for the Bulldogs, striking out one batter each. The bottom of the sixth inning is where the unconventional side comes into play for the Bulldogs and Rams, as Boiling Springs loaded the bases before hitting into a double play which resulted in both teams still being tied at the end of the sixth inning but because the game was on a time limit resulted in a matchup between two of the top 5A teams in the state ending in a 3-3 tie. In their second game of the day the Bulldogs defeated their rival, the Chapman Panthers 6-2 to finish still undefeated for the tournament. Chapman took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning off a hit by Jarren Metcalf that scored two Panther runners. Boiling Springs responded in with one run in the fourth, three runs in the fifth, and two more in the sixth inning to take the 6-2 victory. The Bulldogs were led in the game by Tristan Smith and Luke Compton who both had two hits for Boiling Springs in the game, including a double for each. Dylan Anderson picked up the win for the Bulldogs in the game pitching four innings while only allowing two runs while striking out six batters. Davis Starnes also added two innings of shutout relief while striking out two Panther batters. Earlier in the day, Chapman also picked up their first win of the day defeating St. Joseph's 6-0 to start off the second day of the tournament. The tournament will now shift to Duncan Park on Monday and Tuesday with start times still to be announced. Comments are closed.
