After a lot of changes during the offseason the Boiling Springs Bulldogs proved on Friday night that they are going to be a team to keep an eye on in the 2018 season as they claimed a 22-7 road victory at Westside.
One of the major changes for the Bulldogs this offseason was at quarterback as junior Aaron Thomas took over the reigns of the Boiling Springs offense and proved on Friday night that he was up for the challenge as he helped lead the Bulldogs offense to a three hundred and forty-one yard output. Thomas was seventeen of twenty-right passing for 220 yards and one touchdown while also adding thirty yards rushing with another touchdown. "I thought he threw the ball really well," said Boiling Springs head coach Rick Tate. "I think for his first game it was a really good performance." It wasn't all Thomas on offense though as wide receivers Reggie Crocker and Caden Peeler also had big nights. Junior Reggie Crocker had seven receptions for 107 yards and scored the first touchdown of the 2018 season as he caught a thirty-yard touchdown pass from Thomas to put the Bulldogs up 7-0 midway through the first quarter. Senior Caden Peeler had a big game ad well as he finished with five receptions for eighty-two yards. The Bulldogs offense also got an Impressive performance from Trey Miller on the ground as he rushed thirteen times for sixty-four yards on Friday night. After Crocker's touchdown in the first quarter the only other score of the first half came when Boiling Springs junior kicker Tanner Robbins kicked a twenty-five yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 10-0 halftime lead. The Bulldogs defense allowed it's only score of the game with five minutes to go in the third quarter when Westside senior running back Paul Johnson scored from one yard out to put the Boiling Springs lead at 10-7. With time running out in the third quarter Westside got the ball back and was threatening but were stopped on fourth and three when Boiling Springs Jayden Sims and Desmond Smith threw the Westside runner for a three yard loss. On the very first play of the fourth quarter Boiling Springs' Thomas connected with Peeler on a fifty-four yard pass to get down to the Westside three yard line. Two plays later Thomas was able to score on a two yard quarterback run and put the Boiling Springs lead at 17-7. On the ensuing kickoff the Bulldogs pinned the Westside offense inside their own ten yard line and the Boiling Springs defense kept them there forcing them to punt from their own three yard line. The snap on the punt was high going out the back of the end zone giving the Bulldogs a safety and a 19-7 lead with 8:56 left in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs would add another Robbins field goal on the ensuing drive this time from thirty-two yards out giving the Boiling Springs a 22-7 lead. On defense the Bulldogs were led in tackles by senior Alejandro Libre with four and a half tackles and Logan Billings with four tackles. They also got very impressive performances in the secondary from seniors Storm Duck and Shamar Wilson who both had key interceptions to end two Westside drives. The victory on Friday night was also a historic win for the Bulldogs as head coach Rick Tate moved into second place on the all-time Boiling Springs coaching list with his fortieth win as the Bulldogs head coach. "It's a special one for me no doubt, there's not a lot of football coaches in South Carolina lucky enough to get forty wins at one school," said Coach Tate. "I'm really proud to be a part of it and hopefully we'll win forty more." The Bulldogs will look to keep on winning next week as they travel to face an old rival Chapman who defeated Seneca 52-34 on Friday night. Comments are closed.
