BOILING SPRINGS, SC - In the world of sports, not everyone gets to continue their playing careers at the next level but for nine Boiling Springs athletes on Tuesday morning they got the opportunity to continue their athletic careers at the college level next season.
Boiling Springs football player JoJo Barrett, who is also a member of the wrestling team, the lacrosse team, and the track team, signed to continue his football career at Lenior-Rhyne next season where he plans on majoring in medical science with a minor in creative writing. He said that the coach had the right answer to a question that he had that made him want to commit to Lenior-Rhyne. "It's a nice community and I just kind of fell in love with it," said Barrett. "When I talked to the coach, I was looking for an answer from him and he said that it was more about building the people than just about football which is what I wanted to hear. They are also a great football team, and I can't wait to get up there." Barrett was known for the energy he brought to any event that he was participating in at Boiling Springs and said he's going to continue that at the next level. "I'm just going to keep being me," said Barrett. "I'm going to continue to uplift my brothers at the next team and being myself." "The coaching staff and players there just made it feel like home as I got to meet a lot of the guys." Justin Dawkins will be continuing his career at Spartanburg Methodist College where he plans on majoring in computer science. He has been the starting right fielder for the Bulldogs the last two seasons. "It's close to home and I'm not too far away from anyone," said Dawkins. "It's a really great opportunity and I'm grateful for it. It also gives my parents the opportunity to see me play college ball regularly." Mason Shuford will be continuing his college career at Kings University in Bristol, TN where he plans on majoring in business. He has been a pitcher for the Bulldogs program the last four years. "I went on a visit up there and liked it because everyone seemed like family to me," said Shuford. "They welcomed me and took me in as their own when I went up there to visit." She said that the campus along with coaching were keys to her commitment to Southern Wesleyan next year. "I liked the environment and when I went on the visit, I like how Christ centered it was which played a big part in my decision," said Trudell. "When I went to their practices, I really liked how their coaches handled things as they were able to give criticism but in a different type of way."
