Coming off a holiday break that saw them capture the Bobcat Classic championship in Bluffton, the Boiling Springs basketball team got revenge for a playoff to Riverside last season by defeating the Warriors 55-48 on Friday night in a region II-5A matchup. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 6-0 lead to start the game only to see Riverside storm back to grab an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter continued to go the Warriors way as they outscored the Bulldogs 14-7 over the quarter to grab a 25-17 halftime lead. In the second half the Bulldogs played like a new team as they rallied in the third quarter outscoring the Warriors 19-9 over the period behind some hot shooting from senior JB Kennedy who scored ten of his game high fifteen points in the third quarter. After being held scoreless in the first half Kennedy scored all fifteen of his points in the second half. In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs continued their run against the Warriors as they repeated their third quarter scoring total and outscored Riverside 19-14. Boiling Springs got some clutch free throws from seniors Pierre Gentry and Chance Guest down the stretch as they combined to go six for six from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Gentry ended the game with ten points and six rebounds while Guest ended the game with eight points and eight rebounds. With the victory the Bulldogs improved to 1-2 in the region with a busy stretch upcoming for them next week as they host Dorman on Tuesday night, travel to Spartanburg for a make-up game on Wednesday night and then host Gaffney on Friday night. Lady Bulldogs Rout Warriors on Friday Night The Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs improved to 3-0 in region play on Friday night as they captured a 44-18 victory over the Riverside Warriors.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-3 first quarter lead behind a great scoring output from senior Amaya Richardson who scored ten of her game high eighteen points in the first quarter. "Amaya has really been playing well for us," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. "She averaged twenty points a game for us in the Christmas tournament and it has just really clicked for her." The Bulldogs got an impressive performance on the defensive side of the ball on Friday night as they held the Warriors to only nine points a piece in each half and at one point in the first half didn't allow Riverside to score over a ten minute period. Coach Lytle said that defense had been a point of focus for the Bulldogs lately. "We wanted to see our defense bring some pressure," said Coach Lytle. "We have a big matchup against Dorman on Tuesday night and I wanted to see what kind of defensive pressure our team was capable of putting on another team." Boiling Springs with the win remains undefeated in region with three region games next week. The key matchup for the Bulldogs will be on Tuesday night as they host Dorman. "It's going to be a great matchup on Tuesday night," said Coach Lytle. "I think both teams have great guard play but I think if we have Amaya play like she has recently we may just have an advantage." Comments are closed.
