BOILING SPRINGS, SC - For the first time in 35 years, the Boiling Springs boy's tennis team are region champions, defeating the Spartanburg Vikings 4-2 on the home court on Thursday afternoon.
It's only the second region championship in the history of the program and the first one since 1989 under former coach Randy Gregory. "This team has worked harder than any other group I've worked with," said Bulldogs head coach Matthew Shumate. "They have put the work in both on and off the court and earned this achievement." Boiling Springs got straight set victories in the number four singles as Nathan Miller won (6-0, 6-0) over Farris to finish his region season undefeated. Thomas Raynor and Evan Humphries (6-0, 6-0) also got wins in straight sets to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. William Garner got a (6-1, 6-1) set win in number five singles to push the Bulldogs lead to 3-0 over the Vikings. Preston Reese wrapped up the victory for the Bulldogs getting a strong (6-3, 6-3) win in number two singles to give Boiling Springs the 4-2 win and wrap up the region championship. For cousins Preston Reese and Ben Reese, both members of the 2024 region championship team, they're not the first members of their family to be region champions for the Bulldogs as their fathers were both on the 1989 region championship team. Sam Corbitt, who played as the number one seed for the Bulldogs, helped lead the Boiling Springs team to the championship with his strong play all season. Boiling Springs finishes the season with an 11-2 record, with their two losses coming on very close matches. The Bulldogs wrapped up the number one seed for the 5A playoffs and will look to get their first playoff win since 2014 as they host region rival Byrnes on Tuesday. As the number one seed, Boiling Springs will host at the first two rounds of the playoffs as long as they keep winning. Comments are closed.
