CHESNEE, SC - On Tuesday, the 7th annual Chesnee Roundball Classic tipped off with an impressive field of competition and the nightcap saw the third matchup of the year between Boiling Springs and Chesnee with the Bulldogs coming away with a 71-39 victory over the Eagles.
"I'm happy for our guys because I think we done a better job of executing both offensively and defensively," said Bulldogs head coach Craig Martin. "I think our bench guys done a lot better job of coming in and executing like our first group did tonight. It was a good team experience." Boiling Springs jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the first quarter behind seven points from Tre Locklear before pushing their lead to 31-15 at halftime. The third quarter was the big difference maker in the game as the Bulldogs outscored the Eagles 31-13 on their way to a 62-28 lead at the end of the quarter. Boiling Springs senior WJ Fowler started the run scoring nine of the team's first eleven points of the quarter on three-pointers. Boiling Springs was led in the third quarter run by freshman Isiah Atkins, who was making his first start, and scored nine of his game high 15 point in the quarter. Coach Martin was proud of his freshman's performance in his first ever start. "We've been waiting on that type of performance from him," said Martin. "He has been doing a great job in practice and is like a sponge just soaking up knowledge every time we teach him something new. He's doing a great job and I'm happy for him, his potential is through the roof." The fourth quarter saw Chesnee outscore the Bulldogs 11-9 as the two teams allowed a lot of players playing time late in the game. Sawyer Johnson led Chesnee in the fourth quarter with four points as Boiling Springs' Kyle Johnson led the Bulldogs with four points of his own in the quarter. "It was good being able to get a lot of guys in tonight and letting our bench guys get some time tonight which is well deserved," said Martin. "Those bench guys work just as hard every day in practice and our first group wouldn't be where they're at without that group." Isaiah Atkins led Boiling Springs with 15 points, four rebounds, and a block. They also had two more players finish in double figures as senior Tre Locklear finished the game with 13 points and senior WJ Fowler ended the game with 12 points of his own. Noah Mvula and Dawson Pruitt led the scoring for Chesnee as both players finished the game with six points each. Boiling Springs will return to action on Wednesday against Catawba Ridge in the winner's bracket of the tournament at 7:30 PM while Chesnee will face Blacksburg at 4:30 PM in the consolation bracket of the tournament.
