WEST COLUMBIA, SC - In a game originally scheduled as a home game for the Bulldogs, recent weather forced the Boiling Springs baseball to take a road trip to the state capitol for a doubleheader against Gray Collegiate Academy on Wednesday.
With the teams playing a doubleheader, the games were set for five inning matchups which saw the two teams split the games. In the first game it was a pitching duel between Boiling Springs pitcher Kyle Dill and Gray pitcher Blaine Redmond as both pitchers had scoreless outings through four innings. It was two errors in the bottom of the fifth inning by the Bulldogs that allowed Connor Holmes to score from third base on another error that allowed Garrett Blankenship to reach base allowing Gray to take the 1-0 victory over Boiling Springs. The second game went much more in favor of the Bulldogs as they took their first lead of the two games in the bottom of the second inning when Boiling Springs left fielder Noah Ezell crushed a home run to left field scoring both himself and Chansen Cole to take a 2-0 lead over Gray. Kyle Patterson and Landon Stevens started the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back singles for the Bulldogs. Patterson made the score 3-0 in favor of Boiling Springs when he scored on an error that allowed Titus Hutchins to reach safely and Stevens almost made it 4-0 for the Bulldogs but was tagged out at the plate. JD Moore started off the bottom of the fourth inning for the Bulldogs with a double to left field before Logan Merchant, who came on as a courtesy runner, scored from third base on a single to right field by Kellan Spencer to put the lead at 4-0 for the Bulldogs. Boiling Springs with the bases loaded and two outs had second baseman Kai Lee work a walk allowing Ezell to score and push the Bulldogs lead to 5-0 over Gray. Cathen Cole came on to finish out the game for the Bulldogs getting all three outs on strikeouts to clinch the victory for Boiling Springs. Josh Kanipe picked up the victory for the Bulldogs going three innings while allowing no runs on one hit and striking out three batters. He was followed by Emory Horton and Cole who pitched an inning each as they combined for five strikeouts in two innings. Noah Ezell led the Boiling Springs bats going one of one with a home run while working a walk and picking up two RBIs while also scoring two runs. Kellan Spencer, Kai Lee, and Titus Hutchins all got one RBI each for the Bulldogs while Kyle Patterson and Chansen Cole each scored a run of their own. With the split doubleheader, the Bulldogs record improves to 12-5-1 on the season and they'll return to action on Friday at Dorman in a region makeup game from earlier this season.
