BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs baseball honored their eight seniors, who have helped write a lot of Bulldog history, by picking up a big 5-0 region victory over Nation Ford on Wednesday night.
Boiling Springs recognized the accomplishments of seniors Tristan Smith, Ashton Smith, Davis Starnes, Brent Fowler, Jackson Kostiuk, Landon Ellis, Richie Lewis, and Dylan Anderson in a pregame ceremony to thank them for their years in the Bulldogs program. "All eight of our seniors have been a joy to coach," said Bulldogs head coach Jeff Lipscomb. "They've never caused me a second of trouble and they're a dedicated bunch of guys especially in the weight room. They show up every day and play hard which is all you can really ask of a kid. We try to preach to our kids to just do right and these seniors are those type of guys." Boiling Springs got a complete game shutout on the mound from four of their seniors which started with four innings from Tristan Smith who struck out eight batters while only allowing one hit. Smith was followed by Richie Lewis on the mound who allowed only one hit while striking out one Falcons batter before Jackson Kostiuk followed Lewis not allowing a runner on base and striking out one batter himself. Davis Starnes ended the game for the Bulldogs on the mound not allowing a runner and also striking out a batter. Coach Lipscomb said they used a wide range of pitchers on Wednesday because they know they'll need those guys once the playoffs begin next week. "We started with Tristan and he was good as usual but we wanted to keep his pitch count low going into the playoffs next week," said Lipscomb. "Then Richie followed him with a good outing despite limited mound time this year and I told him and Jackson Kostiuk that we're going to need them in the playoffs. We know in the playoffs we're going to need arms that haven't pitched a lot during the season and we're excited about what they're going to give us going forward." On the offensive side of the ball for the Bulldogs, they got their first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning when Richie Lewis reached base on a bunt single before coming around to score from first base on a single to right centerfield by catcher Hudson Wilson to give Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead. The bottom of the fourth inning was the biggest offensive inning of the game for the Bulldogs as they scored three runs in the inning, which started with a single to left field by Davis Starnes. Starnes advanced to second base on a groundout up the middle before advancing to third base on a single to left field by Jackson Reel and then scoring on a single to centerfield by Ashton Smith to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0 over the Falcons. Reel made the Bulldogs lead 3-0 when he came home to score on a single to centerfield by Richie Lewis before Ashton Smith scored on a bunt single by Luke Compton to give Boiling Springs a 4-0 lead. With one out in the fifth inning, Davis Starnes reached base on a single to leftfield before stealing second base. Stanes made the Bulldogs lead 5-0 when he came home to score on a single to centerfield by Jackson Reel helping to secure the Bulldogs victory. Boiling Springs will return to the field on Friday night when they close out their regular season with a road game against the same Nation Ford team. The Bulldogs will then start the first round of the 5A playoffs on Tuesday night where they will host Northwestern. Lipscomb said it's not going to be hard for his guys to stay focused heading into the playoffs as he says they know what their ultimate goal is for this season. "I don't have to do anything to motivate these guys because they motivate themselves," said Lipscomb. "Any time you have a group you don't have to say much to other than just tell them what the lineup is, that's a special group. They don't need extra motivation from me because they're always ready to play and we're confident going into the playoffs with this group." Comments are closed.
