After opening up the season with a victory over Chesnee on the opening night of their new gym, the Boiling Springs basketball went on the road and picked up their first road win of the season by defeating Woodruff 68-39 on Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the first quarter with Cameron Bockstiegel leading the way with four points being one of six Boiling Springs players to score in the quarter. Just like on Monday night though a big second quarter helped the Bulldogs really pull away from their opponent as Boiling Springs outscored the Wolverines 25-11 in the second quarter giving them a 40-21 halftime lead. The Bulldogs were led in the second quarter by Trey McManus who scored nine points in the quarter, all on three pointers, and was closely followed by Cam Earls who scored five points in the quarter. In the third quarter the Bulldogs continued to add to their lead as they outscored the Wolverines 17-11 and giving them a 57-32 lead going into the final quarter. McManus also led the way in the third quarter for the Bulldogs as he scored seven of his game high eighteen points in the quarter. When the final buzzer sounded the Bulldogs had added to their lead by outscoring Woodruff 11-7 with Khalil Brown scoring six of the Bulldogs final eleven points and securing the victory for the Bulldogs. While McManus led the way for the Bulldogs in scoring they also had two other players finish in double figures on Tuesday night as Jordon Means (10) and Corey Johnson (11) both hit the mark as well. It is the second straight night for all three players to finish in double figures scoring for the Bulldogs. Boiling Springs will have a few nights off before returning to action on Friday night when they host Broome. On Monday evening the Boiling Springs basketball team used a 46-15 run over the second and third quarters to separate themselves from the Chesnee Eagles to pick up an 83-42 victory in the first game in their brand new arena. "The kids were really excited about tonight and getting to play in their new home," said Boiling Springs head coach Hal McManus. "It's always good to get a win in the new place and it was great that the girls also won. It was the perfect start to open up the new building." The game was close at the end of the first quarter as both teams were tied at 18-18 thanks in large part to the outstanding play of Chesnee's Alijah Means who scored eleven points in the first quarter. Boiling Springs was able to keep pace with the Eagles though behind a big quarter from Jordon Means who scored ten points in the quarter and a big night on the boards in the first half from Cameron Bockstiegel who finished with a game high seven rebounds for the Bulldogs. "Means can really shoot the ball well," said McManus about the first half performance from Means. "He had some tough looks there in the first quarter but was able to knock them down. We knew coming into the game that we had to make sure he didn't get great looks and I think we done a better job at that as the game went on." Coach McManus said that he was also really proud of the effort by Bockstiegel on the boards in the game. "That guy takes it as motivation that everyone he plays is going to be bigger than him," said McManus. "He likes to frustrate people down there in the post and he's always a constant for us and brings that same effort every night." From halfway through the second quarter to the end of the game the Bulldogs put together a strong effort both of the offensive and defensive side of the ball forcing the Eagles into turnovers that led to some fast break opportunities for the Bulldogs. The Boiling Springs' run during the second and third quarters was a team effort as seven different Bulldogs all scored with Cam Earls leading the way with fifteen points over the two quarters while he was closely followed over the run by Corey Johnson who picked up eleven points over the two quarters. "We played really well over the last four minutes of the second quarter and then the guys brought that same intensity coming out of halftime," said McManus. "I think we played two really complete quarters there in the second half." Going into the fourth quarter the Bulldogs led the Eagles 64-33 and added to that lead behind a big quarter from Trey McManus who scored nine of his game high twenty points in the fourth quarter while Khalil Brown, after getting in foul trouble early in the game, finished the game out strong scoring seven of his nine points in the game during the fourth quarter. While McManus led the way for the Bulldogs he wasn't the only player to finish in double figures for Boiling Springs as Cam Earls (15), Jordon Means (14), and Corey Johnson (11) also reached the mark on Monday night. Chesnee was led on Monday night by Nyquille O'Fair and Alijah Means who both finished the night scoring eleven points each. They also got a good night from KJ Valentine who picked up eight points for the Eagles. The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday night as they travel to Woodruff before returning home on Friday night to take on the Broome Centurions. Chesnee will next play on Thursday night at Ware Shoals before hosting Brashier Middle College on Friday night in their home opener. Lady Bulldogs Open Season With A WinIn the first basketball game held at the brand new Boiling Springs basketball arena the Bulldogs used a 15-0 run in the second quarter to pick up a 37-19 victory over the visiting Chesnee Eagles.
"The first game in the new gym and there were a lot of jitters," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. "We were down a few players and we were worried about conditioning early so we were thankful for that second quarter. We were able to hit some big shots in the quarter and it helped us hold on to the lead." After going up 9-4 at the end of the first quarter the Bulldogs used a pressure defense to force Chesnee into mistakes and helped aid the 15-0 run over the second quarter. The Bulldogs were led in the second quarter by Arissa Edwards, their only returning starter from last year's team, who scored seven of the fifteen points in the quarter. Edwards also led all scorers on Monday night with fifteen points. "The confidence that Arissa brings with her onto the court is big for us," said Lytle. "She made a few bad decisions tonight but the whole preseason she has been making key decisions for us and that's going to be key this season." The quarter turned out to be very important for the Bulldogs as they cooled off shooting in the second half and were even outscored 8-3 in the fourth quarter. The second half performance of the Eagles was led by senior Abbey Ray who scored nine of her team high eleven points in the second half while also adding nine rebounds. Boiling Springs had only six players available on Monday night and all were key in the Bulldogs victory. Edwards led the way scoring while Ansley King added eight points. D'Marria Glenn and Danielle Brock both scored six points while Meghan Scharpenburg added four points. Jordan Scharpenburg was key in the post for the Bulldogs, against one of the better post players in the state, as she picked up six rebounds and a block. The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday night at Woodruff before returning home on Friday night against Broome. |
