BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs boys' volleyball continued their winning ways as they battled for a playoff seed in the first ever boys' volleyball playoffs defeating Mauldin 3-2 in five sets on Tuesday. While the Bulldogs came away with the victory, it looked as though early that it may be the Mavericks that came out on top as Boiling Springs was flat early, something that Bulldogs head coach Rachel Hyatt wasn't happy about with her team. "We loss the first set as we didn't show up to play to start this match," said Hyatt. "When we did show up to play in the first set, it was a little too late. After winning the fourth set the way we did I thought we'd easily get the win in the fifth set but Mauldin is a tough team. We were able to pick up the win though and it helps us as we head towards the playoffs." In the first set, Mauldin came out on fire taking a 5-0 lead early that they translated into a 25-18 win in the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match. While falling behind in the second set as well, Boiling Springs was able to battle back as they trailed the Mavericks 22-20 before going on a three-point run to take a 23-22 lead on a spike kill by junior Tim Okhman. The Bulldogs and Mavericks exchanged the lead over the next seven points as they were tied four different times before being tied at 26-26 before Boiling Springs scored the final two points with kills from Okhman and senior Mark Zdanevich to even the match at 1-1. The third set saw both teams battle to a 22-22 tie, but it was the Mavericks who outscored the Bulldogs 3-1 to come away with the 25-23 victory over Boiling Springs and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Boiling Springs wasn't going to go away quietly though as they took a big 25-10 victory in the set with senior Prosper Hawj coming away with an impressive shot facing away from the net on the Bulldogs backline that crossed over the net and landed in the center of the Mauldin defense to tie the match at 2-2. With both teams tied at 2-2 in the match it went to a deciding fifth set as the two teams battled for the first one to 15 points. Boiling Springs jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fifth set getting kills from Okhman, Hawj, Zdanevich, and sophomores Antoine Murray and Dylan Booker. Mauldin battled back themselves though as they outscored the Bulldogs 12-4 to take a 14-10 lead in the set only needing one point to win. Trailing 14-11, Boiling Springs went on a 4-0 run getting two kills from Zdanevich along with a kill and a block from Okhman. Mauldin tied the set at 15-15 but then Zdanevich took over coming away with two straight kills to take the fifth set 17-15 and win the match 3-2 over the Mavericks. Zdanevich continued his strong play for the Bulldogs coming away with 22 kills and seven digs, as Coach Hyatt said that he's a player the team counts on in big situations like they were in Tuesday. "Mark has been our go-to person all season long," said Hyatt. "You can trust him and it's who I want my setter to go to with the game on the line. Having him on the court makes us a different team and gives us a chance in any matchup." Tim Okhman had five blocks for the Bulldogs to push his season total to 51 solo blocks, which leads the state of South Carolina this season. Prosper Hawj ended the match with 11 kills and 16 assists while sophomore Coleman Wheatley led the Bulldogs in assists with 35 while also adding nine digs. Dylan Booker had 11 kills for the Bulldogs while Antoine Murray added six kills of his own. With the victory, the Bulldogs will either be the number two or three seed in the upcoming playoffs but before they reach the playoffs, they'll honor their six seniors for senior night next Monday in a matchup against Greenwood that is set to begin at 6:00 PM.
