With the playoffs quickly approaching the Boiling Springs volleyball team picked up a crucial 3-0 win over Spartanburg as the Bulldogs continue their push to move up in the Region II-5A standings.
"We needed this win tonight to stay alive in the playoff hunt," said Bulldogs head coach Allyson Elliot. "The game tonight was one we had to check off to reach that goal." In game one the Bulldogs led 9-6 but went on 7-0 run behind the serves of sophomore Savannah Page to give Boiling Springs a ten point lead at 16-6. The seven point run kept the Bulldogs in front the rest of the way and Page finished the game off with an ace serve giving Boiling Springs a 25-17 win. Spartanburg led most of the second match until the Bulldogs were able to tie the match at 18-18 and then take a 19-18 lead on a serve by junior Zoe Hughes. The Bulldogs wouldn't trail the rest of the game and took the game 25-22 after a serve from senior Megan Scharpenberg to give Boiling Springs a 2-0 lead in the match. While the Bulldogs trailed 5-1 early in the third game they got serves from senior Carley Szustak to grab a 10-9 lead and then a 5-0 run on serves from junior Alex Fyfe to put them ahead 18-15. The Bulldogs took the match and the game when they won the third game 25-21. Junior Madison Gregory led the Bulldogs in assists with 26 while Alex Fyfe led the team with seven digs and four aces. Sophomore Logan Kenny and senior Carly Szustak both led the Bulldogs in kills as they each had eight kills a piece. "We changed our lineup a little tonight and our girls really adapted to it well," said Elliot. "I was really proud of how they played and it allowed us to give our younger girls some experience that will only help us going forward." While the Bulldogs were very happy to pick up their victory over Spartanburg on Friday night they are also looking forward to a big night on Thursday night as they will be hosting Hillcrest for the Bulldogs tenth annual Pink Game. The Pink game has become an annual event for the Bulldogs that started on October 14, 2010. "It started ten years ago when one of our players mom had passed away due to breast cancer and our team rallied around each other to put on the first game to encourage our player and her family," said Elliot. "Each year it has just become a tradition for our players that they always look forward to doing and it has really become a positive event for our school and the community." In the past ten years of the Pink Game the Boiling Springs volleyball team has raised almost $30,000 that they have donated to the American Cancer Society. "I always think about the player from the first year when this night comes around and in the years since we've had other player's parents who have dealt with cancer also so it is very personal," said Elliot. "It has become bigger than I ever thought and our parents do a great job of embracing it and helping run it every year. It's always a special night." The Mauldin Mavericks were able to use big plays on Friday night to capture a 42-21 victory over the visiting Boiling Springs Bulldogs. In the first half Mauldin was able to convert three different touchdowns from over fifty yards with the first play being an eighty yard touchdown run by Jordan Franklin to tie the game at 7-7.
The Bulldogs defense came up big on the Mavericks first offensive drive as Caden Sullivan intercepted a Mauldin pass returning it to the Mavericks eight yard line and quickly grabbed the lead when the Bulldogs Carlos Carson ran the ball in from eight yards out to grab a 7-0 lead. After Franklin's score for Mauldin the Mavericks got the next score as well when quarterback Stone Watson found running back George Ford for a fifty-nine yard throwback pass to give the Mavericks a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Just three minutes into the second quarter the Mauldin offense was facing a third and seventeen when Watson chunked a pass to the left side of the field finding Jameson Tucker for a seventy-five yard touchdown pass and giving the Mavericks a 21-7 lead. With the Bulldogs trailing with just over two minutes to go in the quarter quarterback Jalen Dodd was able to find Carlos Carson on a thirty-five yard touchdown pass for Carson's second score of the game and putting the Mavericks lead at 21-14. With just seconds left in the half, Mauldin's Jordan Franklin found the endzone for the second time in the game as he raced down the right side of the field for a twenty-five yard touchdown run making the Mavericks lead 28-14 at halftime. After an onside kick to start the second half for Mauldin the Mavericks were unable to score when the Bulldogs defense forced a fumble and took over the ball at their own sixteen yard line. On the Bulldogs next drive they were able to cap it off when Cam Mills ran the ball in from five yards out for a touchdown to put Boiling Springs within one touchdown at 28-21. On a third and one from the Bulldogs thirty-three yard line the Maverick's Franklin struck again taking a run down the left side of the field in for a touchdown giving the Mavericks a 35-21 lead early in the fourth quarter. With just under three minutes to go in the game the Bulldogs misplayed a Mauldin punt giving the Mavericks the ball at the Boiling Springs sixteen yard line and just two plays later George Ford would run the ball in from twelve yards out to give the Mavericks a 42-21 lead to arrive at the game's final score.
