BOILING SPRINGS, SC - After struggling the last couple of seasons to win the tournament on their home course, the Boiling Springs boys golf team captured the 2023 Spartanburg County championship at Woodfin Ridge in rainy conditions on Wednesday.
Boiling Springs won the tournament with a score of 300, which was fifteen shots of second place finishers Dorman and Spartanburg who tied at a score of 315. While the victory is nice, getting what they almost felt like was a curse at the home course in the championship was even better. "We broke the home course curse," said senior golfer Andrew Gregory with a chuckle. "In all honesty though it feels good because it'll give us some confidence as a team and shows we can defend the home course." Boiling Springs head coach Josh Pruitt said that with the recent struggles in previous county tournaments at the home course that they had this one circled on the calendar. "This is a tournament we always feel like we should win," said Pruitt. "Coming up short the last few years we circled this one on the calendar as an event that we really wanted to win this year and for Andrew to come out and shoot what he did today is pretty impressive." On a day that saw less than ideal weather conditions, the performance that Bulldogs golfer Andrew Gregory put in was even more impressive as he won the county individual championship with a score of 66, which was six shots better than the next closest golfer. Gregory said that winning the county individual championship and team championship his senior year meant a little bit more than in previous years. "It means a little more because it's the last one and I get to go out at this tournament with a bang," said Gregory. When asked about how the weather conditions effected his play on Wednesday, Gregory said the weather definitely had an effect on the course and how he played. "The weather made the gloves wet and we didn't get much roll," said Gregory about the weather conditions on his play. "The greens were really sticky except on chip shots because then it got a little scary on those. It wasn't the easiest conditions today but we accomplished our goal." Pruitt said that his team being able to put down such good scores on a day with such rough conditions showed who his team really is as a team. "It goes back to who we are and our guys are just a great team," said Pruitt. "When you have a great team it doesn't matter what the conditions are because you're going to fight through them. It shows a lot of fortitude from the guys on our team and finally won this tournament on the home course." When asked how the performance by himself and his team on such a bad weather day on Wednesday will affect their play the rest of the season Gregory said that it should be only better the rest of the season for them in better weather. "Shooting a good score here we can now go to any other tournament and walk out of the hotel seeing the sun shining and know we have a chance because it's not the worst conditions we've played in this year," said Gregory with a laugh. Gregory was joined on the All-County team by fellow Bulldog Walker Ingram who shot a 75 on Wednesday but they weren't the only local players to have good performances in the poor weather conditions. Chapman's Will McGraw made the All-County team with a score of 73 while Chesnee's Creighton Rentz also made the All-County team with a score of 74. They were joined on the All-County team by Granger Amick (Spartanburg Day), Will Ruth (Dorman), Connor Williams (Spartanburg), and Ben McKinney (Woodruff). Boiling Springs won the Spartanburg County tournament with a score of 300 while Spartanburg and Dorman tied at 315, which accounted for three of the 14 teams that competed on Wednesday. The rest of the field behind the top three were: Spartanburg Day (321), Woodruff (321), Gaffney (330), Byrnes (341), Chapman (347), Chesnee (352), Spartanburg Christian Academy (358), Boiling Springs B (368), Laurens (383), Broome (396), and Landrum (433). The Bulldogs will return to the course on March 27th when they participate in the Yellow Jacket Invitational at the Cobbs Glenn Golf Course in Anderson. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - In a matchup between two region rivals, it was a big third inning by the Cavaliers that led Dorman to a 5-1 road victory over the homestanding Boiling Springs Bulldogs on Tuesday night.
The top of the third inning saw Maddie Bishop start the inning off with a single to right centerfield before moving to second on a walk to Logan Smith. Both runners moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Brynn Laney before later scoring on a single to centerfield by Emma Bright to put Dorman up 2-0 over the Bulldogs. Bright and Lydia Johnson, who reached base on a walk, both added to the Cavaliers lead on a double to left centerfield by Kasey Wolfe to put the Cavaliers up 4-0 over Boiling Springs. The Cavaliers added another run in the top of the fifth inning as Lydia Johnson made the score 5-0 when she scored from third base on a Bulldogs error. Boiling Springs had their opportunities offensively but couldn't seem to catch a break in the game. In the top of the first inning, Sydnee Spencer and Emma Wilkins both reached base on singles and even after an out had runners on first and third base but weren't able to get a run home. The Bulldogs had four different runners reach third base before scoring their first run of the game. In the top of the seventh inning, Chloe Osteen, who reached base in all three of her at-bats on Tuesday night, got the inning started by reaching first base on a Dorman error. She moved to second base on an Emma Wilkins single to left field before scoring on an infield single by Gracen Bennett to put the Dorman lead at 5-1 over the Bulldogs but that was as close as it would get in the game. Boiling Springs pitcher Bri Stanley pitched all seven innings while she struck out six batters against the Cavaliers. Kasey Wolfer pitched all seven innings for Dorman as she struck out nine batters of her own on Tuesday night. Boiling Springs will return to action on Friday when they host another region matchup as Byrnes will come to town with the JV game to start at 5:30 PM and the varsity game to follow at 7:30 PM. DUNCAN, SC - After struggling to get their bats going last week, the Boiling Springs baseball team was able to get the bats going a lot better to start this week as they defeated region rival Byrnes 9-4 on the road Monday night.
While the Bulldogs won the first game of the series, they know that's just the start and will look to use the victory on Monday to build momentum for the rest of the series. "We always enjoy the wins because we know how hard they can be to get each and every night," said Bulldogs head coach Jeff Lipscomb. "We're tickled to death to start it off like this but we did this last week and loss the next two to Dorman, so we have to make sure we win the series now after getting the first win." Boiling Springs got the bats going in the first inning as with one out, Justin Dawkins reached base on a walk before moving to second base on an infield single by Jackson Cole. Both runners moved up a base on a passed ball before Dawkins scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Luke Compton and Cole scored on a double to right field by Corbin Childers to give the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead. Byrnes responded by scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning when Jaxson Camp, who reached base on an error, later scored on a single to left field by Connor Crenshaw. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the third inning as Jackson Cole, who reached base on a walk, later scored on a single to left centerfield by Hudson Wilson. Wilson also added the second run of the inning when he later scored on a passed ball with two outs to give Boiling Springs a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the third inning Byrnes added another run to cut the Bulldogs lead to 4-2, but some good Boiling Springs defense kept it from being more. With the bases loaded and no outs, Bulldogs pitcher Jackson Cole forced a groundout to first base that saw first baseman Corbin Childers fire home to catcher Hudson Wilson for one out before Wilson fired back to Childers for the second out of the inning. Jaxson Camp scored his second run of the game on the next at-bat when he scored from third base on a passed ball. Boiling Springs added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, starting with Titus Hutchins singling to left field followed by Justin Dawkins singling himself which turned into both runners being at second and third bases. Jackson Cole followed Dawkins with a double to the right field corner scoring both Hutchins and Dawkins to put the Bulldogs lead at 6-2 over the Rebels. Byrnes added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Jaxson Camp scored his third run of the game and Kadan Roach also scored his first run of the game on an error that allowed Connor Crenshaw to reach base. The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the sixth inning when Justin Dawkins scored from second base on a single to right field by Luke Compton to put their lead at 7-4. They added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning when Hudson Wilson, who reached base on a double to left field, later scored on a Landon Stevens double down the left field line before Stevens stole third base and scored on a groundout to shortstop by Titus Hutchins. Jackson Cole had a strong night on the mound for the Bulldogs as he pitched six innings while allowing four runs on three hits and striking out 11 batters. He was relieved in the seventh inning by Jackson Reel, who pitched an inning of relief not allowing a run and striking out the final batter of the game. "I'm proud of Jackson Cole as he didn't have his best stuff but pitched with a lot of grit and heart tonight," said Lipscomb. "He's our leader and had some big hits at the plate tonight as well." Even with winning the first game of the series, the Bulldogs know they have a lot of work ahead of them to win the series, which is important for them against the tough Byrnes team. "We've got to clean up our game and keep from just giving the other team runs on our mistakes," said Lipscomb. "It's huge to get the win in the series against Byrnes especially here early after dropping the series against Dorman last week. The game of baseball can go anyway at any time." The Bulldogs and Rebels will next face off on Wednesday night at Boiling Springs in the second game of the series that is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - In a matchup of district two rival schools, the Boiling Springs softball team downed their sister school Chesnee 6-5 in nine innings on Thursday night.
A single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning from Bulldogs starting pitcher Bri Stanley was the game winning play that put Boiling Springs on top in the district matchup. "This game was filled with a lot of energy and a lot of emotion," said Boiling Springs head coach Hannah McDowell. "Chesnee is my alma mater and I have given pitching lessons to Chesnee's pitcher the last two years. There's just a lot of emotion there, I'm just glad we came out on top." Boiling Springs catcher Sayde Parris put the Bulldogs on the board first as she launched a two-run home run to left centerfield in the bottom of the first inning to give the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead. The Bulldog battery of Parris and Bri Stanley came through big for the Bulldogs in the field and at the plate as well on Thursday night. "They have the confidence instilled in them from what we do at practice," said McDowell. "I think they are ready for the big moments as Bri really worked on staying in the moment and that helped her that last at bat." The Eagles got a run back in the tip of the second inning when Emily Pruett hit a leadoff double, and later scored on Mikayla Cannon's RBI triple. Parris once again caused the Eagles problems in the third inning when she reached on a leadoff single before later scoring on an error to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. In the top of the fifth inning, Maddie Handy and Jada Sellars each reached base on two out singles for Chesnee while Skylar Barrett reached base on an error to load the bases. Emily Pruett once again came through for the Eagles with a three RBI double to put the Eagles in front 4-3 of the homestanding Bulldogs. Emma Watkins hit a leadoff double for the Bulldogs in the next inning and advanced to third base on Sayde Parris' one out single before Bri Stanley tied the game at 4-4 with a RBI groundout. Both teams had big moments in the field in the final two innings of regulation as Chesnee's moment came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Abbie Wilson hit a leadoff double and advanced to third base on an error before Chesnee's Maddie Handy struck out the side to end the threat. Boiling Springs' moment came in the top of the seventh inning as the Eagles loaded the bases with one out, but Bri Stanley got a ground ball back to her that she turned into a 1-2-3 double play to end the threat. Chesnee's Rubye Watson started the top of the ninth inning on second base thanks to the international tiebreaker rules. She advanced to third base on Aubrey Aparis's infield single before scoring on Jada Sellars RBI sacrifice fly to give Chesnee a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom half of the ninth inning. Boiling Springs' Bri McAbee started the bottom of the inning as the runner at second base for the Bulldogs before scoring on Chloe Osteen's RBI single. A double by Sydnee Spencer and a single by Emma Wilkins loaded the bases for the Bulldogs before Bri Stanley ended the game with a two out RBI single to earn herself the win in the circle and earn her team the win on the scoreboard. Boiling Springs will be back in action on Tuesday as they will host Dorman in region play with a 7:30 PM scheduled first pitch while Chesnee will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Chapman with a 7:30 PM scheduled first pitch. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - On a frigidly cold windy night, it took a while for the Boiling Springs offense to heat up but when the night was over the #6 ranked Bulldogs came away with a 9-8 victory over the #8 ranked Clover Blue Eagles on Tuesday night.
"These guys give unbelievable effort on the practice field, in the classroom, and on this field tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Tanner Mills. "The results of their effort was seen on this field tonight to come back like they did." The Bulldogs went into the fourth quarter trailing 7-4 and with just over six minutes to go in the fourth quarter went down 8-4 for their largest deficit of the game and time running out to make it up. Just a few seconds later though the Bulldogs began their comeback and it started with a goal from Peyton Tanner who found the back of the net off a right handed shot an assist for from Lincoln Huskey to cut the lead to 8-5 in favor of Clover. Chase Miller found the back of the net just twenty-eight seconds later on a right handed shot to the top left of the net off an assist from Elijah Smith to cut the lead to two goals at 8-6. Tanner added another goal twenty-one seconds later to cut the Clover lead to 8-7 with just exactly five minutes to go in the match. Less than thirty seconds later the Bulldogs tied the game for the first time in the match since the five-minute mark of the first quarter when Elijah Smith took a left-handed shot that hit in the bottom right of the corner to tie the match at 8-8. Over the next four minutes, both teams worked to possess the ball trying to not give up the go-ahead goal but finally with just fifty seconds left in the match, Peyton Tanner hit his third goal of the quarter for the Bulldogs on a right-handed goal to the left of the net to give Boiling Springs their first lead of the game at 9-8 over the Blue Eagles. Tanner led the Bulldogs attack in the fourth quarter and was efficient as he took four shots on goal on Tuesday night with three of them finding the back of the net. "Going into the season Peyton was going to be a role player for us but has just showed up big for us in games this year," said Mills. "He's a very efficient player. He also got some big assists that allowed him to get open for the opportunities to make some big plays." Coach Mills said that while his team didn't get many possessions he was proud of how efficient they were in the possessions that they did have on Tuesday. "This game reminded me a lot of the Charlotte Christian match where we didn't get a lot of possessions," said Mills. "While we didn't get the possessions like we would like to have I was happy with how efficient we were with the possessions that we did have tonight." Before the Bulldogs big fourth quarter rally, they were limited to three goals in the first half with two of them coming from Lincoln Huskey and one goal from Chase Miller. In the third quarter the Bulldogs added another goal when Dawton Martini found the back of the goal with thirty seconds left in the quarter off an assist from goalie Parker Lamb, who had broken down the right side of the field after a save on a Blue Eagles shot. Lamb added the assist to a stat sheet that included 17 saves against Clover on Tuesday night. Chase Miller led the Bulldogs in groundballs controlled with six followed by Javen Chhim with five and Huskey with four of his own. Jacob Williams, Carson Fritz, Jake Nicely, and Ben Armstrong all had two goals each for Clover on Tuesday night. "We're going to take the momentum from tonight into practice tomorrow as we have a lot of stuff we still need to fix," said Mills. "We'll celebrate this win tonight but we're not going to overlook a very good Spartanburg team that we will face on Friday night. The Vikings have a solid team and I'm excited for our guys to get to compete against them later this week." Boiling Springs will next return to the field on Friday night when they host Spartanburg in another region matchup. SOFTBALL - BOILING SPRINGS 12 SPARTANBURG 1 The Boiling Springs softball team went on the road Tuesday night to start region play defeating the Spartanburg Vikings 12-1 to begin region play 1-0. The Bulldogs saw both Saydie Parris and Bri Stanley hit home runs as Stanley finished just a single short of hitting for the cycle. Boiling Springs softball will return to play on Thursday night as they host district foe Chesnee at 7:30 PM. The Bulldogs will return to region play next Tuesday when they host Dorman. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs baseball team got an impressive starting performance from a senior pitcher as well as a clutch hit from a freshman to pick up a 1-0 victory over the Dorman Cavaliers and take a key lead in an important region series on Monday night.
The Bulldogs saw senior pitcher Jackson Cole outduel the Cavaliers as he threw seven innings while striking out 14 batters and only allowing three hits in the opening game of the first region series of the season for both teams. "We got a great game from Jackson Cole and Dorman got a great game from their guy tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Jeff Lipscomb. "Cole has made himself a dominant high school pitcher as he's a great kid and a leader. We had a couple of opportunities to get a run early but couldn't make it happen. Then, like it was meant to happen, we got a clutch hit from a freshman on the first pitch he sees to walk it off." While the Bulldogs had an opportunity in the first inning to get an early lead, it took until the eighth inning for them to take the first lead of the game on some clutch hitting from the bottom of the lineup to get the win. With one out in the bottom of the inning, the Bulldogs saw Landon Stevens work a walk before he advanced to third base on a single to right field by Justin Dawkins and with the game on the line Dawkins advanced to second base on a steal to put runners at second and third base for the Bulldogs. Dawkins was the only Bulldogs player to have multiple hits on Monday night as he accounted for two of the team's five hits. After a strikeout gave the Cavaliers two outs in the inning, the Bulldogs saw freshman Titus Hutchins stroll to the plate and on the first pitch of the at-bat he singled to centerfield bringing home Stevens while giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 home victory over the Cavaliers. "Titus on the first pitch he sees gets a line drive and walks it off," said Lipscomb. "I'm happy for him and he's going to be a special player. Stevens is a gritty player who got on base there to start the inning and then Justin hit the ball exactly where he needed to on the hit and run as they all done their job, as it almost seemed like it was meant to be." In a matchup between two of the top programs in Region II-5A, Lipscomb said that being able to take an early lead in the region series is a load off for himself and the team saying they hope it leads to another victory which would be huge in the region race. "It's a relief to get the first win of this series as I've had this game circled on the calendar since we got the region schedule in September," said Lipscomb. "It's so big to get that first one in this series and hopefully we can go over their place on Wednesday and get a good performance before coming back here to the house to finish off the series. Hopefully we can find a way to win another one as it would be huge to get the series win here early in the season because getting two from that team means you've had a good week." Jackson Reel, who came on in relief of Cole in the top of the eighth inning, picked up the victory for the Bulldogs pitching one inning while giving up a hit and striking out another batter. Dorman got a strong out from starting pitcher Brayden Parton who pitched five and two third innings giving up three hits while striking out four batters on Monday night. Both teams have two more games left in the series at they'll compete at Dorman on Wednesday before returning to Boiling Spring for game three of the series on Friday night. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs boys' soccer team, after starting the season 2-1 including their only loss coming in penalty kicks against Greer, started region play with a strong 4-0 victory over the Gaffney Indians on Monday night.
With the Bulldogs expected to be a major player in the race for the region championship, it was important for the team to grab a win in the first matchup. "It's always good to get an early win in the region to kind of set the tone and see what we look like against our region competition while also allowing us to see what we need to work on," said Bulldogs head coach Jack Underwood. "It's great to get ahead in the win column in region play early and in this game we took control early playing our game and it was really just an all-around win for us." In the first few minutes of the match, Gaffney fired a shot at the Bulldogs goal that ricocheted off the crossbar that in turn led to a Boiling Springs counterattack that ended with senior Will Poplawski finding the back of the net just three minutes into the match, which was the beginning of a big night for the Bulldogs forward. At the twelve-minute mark of the first half, Poplawski struck again for the Bulldogs scoring his second goal of the matchup to give Boiling Springs a 2-0 lead over the Indians. Boiling Springs added their third goal of the match and of the first half when junior defenseman Holden Mace was able to find the back of the net to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead in the twenty-second minute of the match. The Bulldogs used a strong presence in their midfield to control the game while finding good opportunities through different runs at the top of the field to find scores. In the second half the Bulldogs continued their strong play in the midfield but Gaffney was able to squeeze the Bulldogs offense and keep them out of the goal early in the second half. "In the final third they kind of packed in there on us on defense in the second half," said Underwood. "We played our game though and got the goals we needed early on and made it where we didn't have to chase the game." Poplawski earned a hat-trick, his third goal of the game, at the twenty-seven-minute mark of the second half when he broke down the right side for a right footed goal to the top left corner of the net off an assist from senior midfielder Yovany Nova to give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead. It was the second hat-trick of the season for Poplawski and it was no surprise to Coach Underwood that he accomplished a feat like that. "Will is such a dynamic player," said Underwood. "His speed and explosiveness make him a difficult player to handle. He's got a great bit of skills that makes almost anyone wanting to cover him, almost impossible." The Bulldogs also got their first shutout of the season as their defense, one with lots of younger players on the back line, allowed a few shots on goal but didn't allow any of them to find the back of the net. "They got a few good shots against us but we were able to keep them scoreless," said Underwood. "We have a young backline and a young keeper but the only way for them to get better is learning in situations like this and the ones they've faced earlier this season. We've given up some goals this season but it's part of the learning process for our young guys back there." Boiling Springs will return to the pitch on Thursday when they travel to Spartanburg to play the Vikings in another region matchup, which will be one week ahead of their next matchup against Dorman who ousted the Bulldogs from the 5A playoffs last season. DUNCAN, SC - Just two days after suffering a tough home loss to rival Dorman, the Boiling Springs boys' lacrosse team rebounded with a 17-9 victory over region foe Byrnes on Thursday night.
"Tonight, was a great night for Boiling Springs boys' lacrosse," said Bulldogs head coach Tanner Mills. "In the game tonight, we revived our identity of playing fast, strong, and selfless." The Bulldogs and Rebels battled back-and-forth in the first half as both teams were able to find the back of the net early in the match. In the second half though the Bulldogs locked down defensively as they only allowed the Rebels to score three goals in the second half including outscoring Byrnes 6-2 in the third quarter for a 14-8 lead. "We played a great second half only allowing one goal in the fourth quarter," said Mills. "The defense started communicating at the level we expect, and they turned their performance around." On the offensive side of the ball the Bulldogs had three players account for 14 of the Bulldogs seventeen goals in the match. Chase Miller and Elijah Smith each recorded five goals each while Lincoln Huskey added four goals of his own. The trio also combined for eight assists. "When Chase gets rolling our offense starts exploding and becoming efficient," said Mills. "Lincoln is arguably one of the players on the field in every game as he is a force and a nightmare for any defense while Elijah is averaging five goals a game and tonight proved to be one of the best attackmen in South Carolina." Javen Chhim also had a huge game at the faceoff position as he only loss two faceoffs all game long. Boiling Springs will return to the field on Tuesday when they host Clover in an out-of-region matchup for the Bulldogs as the game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM. OTHER GAMES Boiling Springs Softball - Bulldogs 22 Mauldin 3 The Boiling Springs softball team rebounded from a tough 3-2 loss to Riverside on Wednesday by coming away with a big 22-3 win over Mauldin on Thursday night. The Bulldogs were led on offense by junior Bri Stanley who hit two home runs in the Bulldogs matchup against the Mavericks. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - After defeating St. Joseph's a week ago in the Steve Sanders Tournament and following that up with a 10-0 victory on Tuesday, the Boiling Springs baseball finished off the season sweep of the Knights with a 13-4 victory on Wednesday night.
While the Bulldogs came away with the victory, the Knights made the Bulldogs work for the win battling them throughout all seven innings. "We hit some balls right at them early and had some bad base running in the first three innings that just didn't allow us to get a run early," said Bulldogs head coach Jeff Lipscomb. "We finally settled down in the fourth inning and was able to get runs across the plate. We've swung the bats well the last two nights, but we know the competition is getting ready to get tougher starting Monday against Dorman. If we'll stay focused, I think we can beat anyone." Both teams done a good job of keeping the other team off the board in the first three innings as neither team was able to score a run and the Bulldogs kept that scoreless streak of the Knights going into the top half of the fourth inning. The scoreless performance was led by Bulldogs pitcher Corbin Childers who pitched four and two-third innings while only allowing three hits and striking out seven batters. In the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs were able to break through on the scoreboard as they scored seven runs in the inning to take a 7-0 lead. The first runs of the game scored with the bases loaded when Justin Dawkins singled to right field scoring both Jackson Reel and Jackson Cole to take a 2-0 lead over the Knights and allowed Landon Stevens to advance to third base. Stevens scored from third on a wild pitch to Rylee Douglas before Dawkins scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Douglas to give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead. Eli Mobley, who had reached on a walk earlier in the inning, pushed the Bulldogs lead to 5-0 when he scored on an error that also allowed Luke Compton to advance to third base after he reached base on a bunt single. Compton later scored on a wild pitch to make the lead 6-0 before Kohen Sloand scored on a bases loaded walk to Stevens to make the lead 7-0 over the Knights. With the Bulldogs lead looking strong, the Knights battled back in the top of the fifth inning as they scored four runs to narrow the lead to 7-4 in favor of the Bulldogs. Trey Sanders, Jack Murphy, Henry Dryden, and Jackson Campbell all scored runs for the Knights in the inning. Boiling Springs responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning to fend off the Knights attack and added two more in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the 13-4 victory. Jackson Reel pitched the final two and a third innings for the Bulldogs in relief as he allowed only one hit while striking out four Knight batters. "I have a lot of confidence in this team of ours, we just have to grow up and mature," said Lipscomb. "We're going to have some rough nights when region play starts next week but we just have to learn to fight through them. If we stay focused and play for each other, we're going to be just fine." Boiling Springs will now be off until Monday when they start Region II-5A play as they host Dorman at 6:30 PM. OTHER SCORES ON WEDNESDAY Girls Lacrosse - Boiling Springs 9 Dorman 6 Softball - Riverside 3 Boiling Springs 2 DUNCAN, SC - The Boiling Springs golf team officially started their 2023 season on Monday and when the day ended, they had given their head coach Josh Pruitt a great birthday present as the Bulldogs claimed the title of the 2023 Rebel Invitational champions.
The expectations are high for the Bulldogs this year and after struggling some in their preseason tournament last week, Boiling Springs came back out strong shooting a score of 302 at River Falls Plantation golf course, which was five shots ahead of second place teams Greenville and Fort Mill. "It feels good to get this one," said Pruitt. "Last week in the preseason event we kind of got whooped by some of our region schools, so to come out here and survive this golf course I couldn't be happier. This is when it really starts to matter and we'll build on it from here." Pruitt says that while the expectations are high from outside his program, their expectations for themselves are high as well. "We finished the year strong last year and we plan on winning everything we play in this year," said Pruitt. "Our goal is to win every event we play in this year and we'll see what we can do." The Bulldogs were led by senior Andrew Gregory, who shot a team low score of 69 and was just one shot behind medalist Tip Price from Greenville who shot a score of 68. Gregory continued his strong play from the offseason, where he was named the Junior Golfer of the Year but was quick to say the success on Monday was a team effort. "After this offseason it's great to get this win but it wasn't just me, but our team overall played well today," said Gregory. "Winning the tournament today gives us confidence in our ability to accomplish a lot of the goals that we have set for ourselves as a team this season." Rounding out the top five saw Mauldin finish fourth with a score of 308 while Gaffney and Easley tied for fifth with a score of 317. Other local schools that competed were Byrnes (335), Chesnee (373), Chapman (388), Dorman (326), Spartanburg Day (328), Spartanburg (320). and Woodruff (323). The All-Tournament team consisted of Greenville's Tip Price (68), Boiling Springs' Andrew Gregory (69), Mauldin's Major Lenning (70), Spartanburg Day's Granger Amick (71), Fort Mill's Cam Baker (72), and Easley's Colton Evatt (72).
