CHESNEE, SC - It’s rare that two region teams matchup twice before the region schedule starts but that’s exactly what happened on Wednesday as Chesnee defeated Blacksburg 75-69 on the second day of the 2022 Chesnee Roundball Classic.
The second matchup between the two teams was a very back and forth affair that saw the Eagles finally take control of in the final quarter of play behind a strong performance from a post player. ”I told our guys no matter how ugly we made it look, it was still a win at the end of the day," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "It's the second time we've played these guys, and both have been close, so I expect the next two to be the exact same thing. We're so evenly matched with good athletes and Coach Simms has done a great job with those guys but at the end of the day it was a good win for us today." Chesnee jumped out to an 18-16 lead at the end of the first quarter before pushing their lead to eight points at halftime at 36-28. Blacksburg tied the game at 18–18 to start the second quarter but a 10-1 run led by baskets from Kaylob Blanton, K’Jay Proctor, and Carson Williamson soon pushed the Eagles lead to nine points at 28–19. Blacksburg made a run in the third quarter outscoring the Eagles 18-11 to pull the score within one which was aided by a big quarter from Jacob Gilfillan who had 10 of his game high 27 points in the quarter. The Eagles outscored Blacksburg 28-23 in the final quarter with some clutch free throw shooting that saw Chesnee go 16 of 21 from the stripe in the game. One of the biggest pieces for the Eagles on Wednesday was the play of forward Daniel Wease who finished the game with a double-double scoring 19 points while adding 20 rebounds, three steals, and an assist. ”It was big for us to get a game like that from Daniel especially with K'Jay being ill last week," said Pitt. "With that we've had to ask Daniel to step up and play bigger on the post which he's done. He's like an extension of myself on the court because he sees things as they happen, and he points them out. I wouldn't be surprised if further down the road he isn't a basketball coach one day. Just seeing a big day from him like that is great to see." Wease wasn’t the only player to end in double figures as Kaylob Blanton had 17 points, Noah Mvula had 13 points, and Dawson Pruitt added 11 points of his own. ”Kaylob has been steady for us all season and Noah built some confidence early after hitting some big shots," said Pitt. "We have a group of guys that on any day can step up and give us double digits in points which is nice to have as a coach." Jacob Gilfillan led Blacksburg and all scorers with 27 points while his teammate Ratavious Degree finished with a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Chesnee will face Union County in the fourth-place game on Thursday at 4:30 PM while Blacksburg will face Broome at 3:00 PM in the seventh-place game.
