The Chesnee boys basketball team overcame a slow first half performance on Monday night and came away with a 63-42 win over visiting Laurens Academy. "We just couldn't get some shots to fall for us there early and I think that affected our defense leading us to a slow start," said Chesnee Head Basketball Coach Andy Pitt about his team's first half performance. The Eagles were led in scoring in the first half by senior Dawson Williamson who had eight first half points.
The Eagles led Laurens Academy 25-23 at halftime but the offense came to life in the second half as they outscored their opponent 38-19. The second half output was led by junior Desmond Tate, a transfer from North Carolina, who scored fifteen of his team high seventeen points in the second half. "In the second half we made some baskets and it allowed us to put some pressure on them defensively that forced them into some mistakes," said Coach Pitt. "Tate has really brought some energy for us and he has really stepped up for us while we've been dealing with some injuries lately." Chesnee also got a good performance on Monday night from Williamson who added to his eight first half points and finished the game with fourteen points for the Eagles. The victory was the Eagles second straight improving their record to 3-2 on the season and the Eagles look to extend their winning streak to three games as they take on Union County on Thursday night, a team they defeated earlier this season. When asked about the game Thursday night Coach Pitt said, "They are kind of banged up too but we got to put the result from that first game out of our mind and bring a lot of effort. We have to bring the same effort we had from that first game." The Eagles have been plagued by injuries early this season but Coach Pitt says that may change soon, "We might be getting one or two of our guys back soon so that will help us going forward."
