After dropping the first two games against Boiling Springs this season the Chesnee softball team was able to get the last one defeating the Bulldogs 5-1 behind an impressive night from Paige Scruggs.
The Eagles Paige Scruggs and the Bulldogs Olivia Hall were locked in a pitching duel early in the game as neither pitcher allowed a run to score over the first four innings. Hall kept the Eagles off the board in the top of the fifth inning as well giving her team a chance to grab the first lead of the game. AD Raines opened up the bottom of the fifth inning with a single to the right side of the field before moving over to third base when Hailey Owens reached base and moved to second on a Chesnee error. With runners at second and third Bulldogs catcher Ragan Bristol hit a single to centerfield that scored Raines but a strong throw from centerfielder Shenandoah Bishop was able to nab Owens at the plate as the Bulldogs held a 1-0 lead after five innings. Paige Scruggs got the first Chesnee run of the game in the top of the sixth inning when she hit her seventh home run of the season to straight centerfield to tie the game at 1-1 and tied herself for second place in most homeruns in a season by an Eagles player just behind Ashley Westbrooks who had eight in a season twice. Chesnee had runners at second and third base with one out but a strong throw by Bulldogs catcher Ragan Bristol was able to catch the Eagles runner off base at third for the second out of the inning. After the out Chesnee's Shenandoah Bishop was the next batter up and she came up clutch giving the Eagles their first lead of the game by hitting a double to left centerfield which scored Maddie Handy and put Chesnee ahead 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. In the bottom half of the inning the Bulldogs were able to get two runners on with one out but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity sending the game into the final inning with the Eagles still ahead. With two outs and Chesnee's Eva Vaca at second base, Paige Scruggs added to the Eagles lead on a double to left centerfield to give Chesnee a 3-1 lead. Ali Scruggs joined Paige Scruggs on base and both came around to score on a single to right centerfield by Sam Carver to put the Eagles ahead 5-1 heading into the bottom half of the inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning the Bulldogs were able to get the lead runner on but couldn't get anything else going as the Eagles came away with the victory. Chesnee was led at the plate by Ali Scruggs who went three of four for the game while Paige Scruggs and Sam Carver led the team in RBI's with two each on Friday night. Paige Scruggs got the win for the Eagles as she pitched six innings on Friday night only allowing one run and striking out eight batters. Chesnee will be back in action on Tuesday night as they host Landrum in a pivotal game towards capturing a region championship.
