CHESNEE, SC- The Chesnee Eagles downed the Blacksburg Wildcats 10-2 on Friday night as the two teams have split first two of three games scheduled this season.
"It felt really good to bounce back and pick up this win," said Chesnee's Ansley Blanton. "After the hard loss earlier this week, we all came together and had some good practices and that helped us pull out the win tonight." Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle said that his team went back to work this week after their earlier loss. "After we lost on Tuesday, we had our best practice of the season on Wednesday," said Fogle. "At the end of the day, that's what we want a resilient team that keeps battling, and we saw that tonight." The Eagles got off to a hot start in the first two innings as Skylar Barrett hit a solo homerun to straightaway centerfield to give the Eagles a one run lead after one inning of play. "This one felt good," said Barrett. "We really wanted to come out and make up for Tuesday. It felt really good off the bat and feels great to know we came up big offensively in a game we needed to win." The Eagles built on the lead in the bottom of the second inning as they sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs. Delani Wright hit a leadoff single while Natalie Morris doubled to put them both in scoring position. Kyndall Brill and Loren Potter drove them in with an RBI single each before Abby Fogle delivered the big blow of the inning with a two RBI double. Ansley Blanton capped the Eagles scoring with an RBI single of her own to make it 6-0 in favor of the Eagles. The Wildcats got a run back in the top of the third inning as Kayla Butler drew a leadoff walk and later scored on Liz Rice's RBI triple that was just inside the foul line and went into the right field corner. After Delani Wright and Natalie Morris got the Eagles started in the second inning, they once again came up big in the fourth inning. Skylar Barrett and Ansley Blanton each hit two out singles and later scored on RBI singles by Wright and Morris to make the score 8-1 in favor of the Eagles. Chesnee expanded the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Claire Owens hit a one out triple while Skylar Barrett drew a walk and advanced to second base thanks to some heads-up base running. Ansley Blanton drove the pair in with a two RBI single to make the score 10-1 in favor of the Eagles after five innings of play. Abby Fogle made a great play defensively when a Blacksburg player hit a bloop single to shallow right field when Fogle then threw her out trying to advance to second base. The play proved pivotal as Paige Beam and Josie Brown followed with back-to-back doubles with Brown picking up an RBI to cut the Eagle lead to 10-2. Kyndall Brill picked up the win in the pitching circle for the Eagles as she pitched five and a third innings scattering nine hits and surrendering just two runs. Bella Rollins closed out the game without allowing a hit in her inning and two-thirds of work. "We have two of the hardest working pitchers in this state," said Fogle. "Coach Sam Carver and Coach Ashley Westbrooks do a tremendous job with our pitching staff, and they keep getting better each time out." Ansley Blanton and Claire Owens each picked up three hits for the Eagles with Blanton driving in three runs and Owens hitting a triple. "We realized our mistakes from earlier this week and worked hard in the cages to be able to attack how she (Blacksburg pitcher Brie Hughey) pitches," said Blanton. Skylar Barrett, Delani Wright, Natalie Morris, and Kyndall Brill each had two hits for the Eagles. Paige Beam and Josie Brown led the Wildcats with two hits each as they each hit a double with Brown collecting an RBI. The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday as they host the Ninety-Six Wildcats with a special spring break 3:00 pm start time. Next week is a big week for the Eagles as they host their annual spring break kid's camp as the camp will be April 1st-3rd and will last from 9 am to noon. The cost will be $50 and is open to kids in second thru sixth grades. Comments are closed.
