Chesnee volleyball started the 2A playoffs with a strong outing on Tuesday afternoon as they defeated Saluda 3-0 keeping the visiting team in single digits in both the final two sets.
"It was a great way to start off the playoffs as the girls really came out swinging tonight," said Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley. "They put some good hits on balls along with putting together some good service runs and just showed they were ready for the playoffs." The first set was the most competitive of the match as Saluda trailed only 19-10 before the Eagles went on a 6-1 run to capture the set 25-11. In the second set the Eagles fell behind 3-1 before going on a 13-0 run that included a kill by senior Jessa Beach to the middle of the court tied the match at 3-3 and a spike kill to the left side by senior AC Yelton capped the run to put Chesnee ahead 14-3. The play by Chesnee's front line, including Beach and Yelton, helped pave the way for the Eagles on Tuesday night. Yelton finished the night with seventeen kills and five digs while Beach got four kills and two blocks. "Jessa and AC are so tall and can jump so high they're intimidating at the net," said Jolley. "With the passes they were making and how Jessa put it back down you could just see the shock on the other team's players with how hard she hit. Those two and our whole frontline are just tremendous and do a great job at blocking and hitting." The Eagles finished off the second set with more strong play along with the front line to go along with some great serving as they captured the set 25-7. Chesnee had many ace serves in the match and junior Kaitlyn Barrett led the way with seven ace serves including two back-to-back serves in the second set to go along with her four kills and twelve digs. "We made some great serves tonight including Kaitlyn Barrett who hit some shots into gaps that makes it really hard for the other team to communicate and see who is supposed to get that ball," said Jolley. "Holly Hines also had some impressive serves and the whole team just did a great job of being aggressive with their serves and getting points that way." In the third set Chesnee fell behind 1-0 but from there on out it was all Eagles. Saluda got their last point of the match when they made the score 11-3 before Yelton spiked the ball for Chesnee to make the score 12-3, starting a 14-0 run to win the set 25-3 and to take the victory in the match. Holly Hines led the Eagles in assists with twenty-three while Ali Scruggs added to the impressive night by the front line with five kills of her own. Chesnee will now host Landrum on Thursday in the second round of the 2A playoffs after Landrum defeated Liberty 3-1 on Tuesday night. Comments are closed.
