WOODRUFF, SC - The Chesnee boys' basketball team traveled to the southern side of Spartanburg along Highway 221 on Monday night and when the night was over, they made the same trip back with a 58-53 victory in tow.
The game was close early as the Eagles jumped out to a 14-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter behind four points each from both Kaylob Blanton and Daniel Wease along with a three-pointer from both Carson Williamson and Kenton Proctor. Nick McConnell led Woodruff in the first quarter with five points of his own. The second quarter saw the Wolverines make a run as they outscored the Eagles 14-5 in the quarter on their way to a 27-19 halftime lead as Woodruff saw McConnell and Lake Smith account for eight of the team's points in the quarter. Chesnee wasn't going to be intimidated by the second quarter run though as they opened the second half with a charge of their own that was led by freshman Elijah Brown who scored eight of the team's 19 points in the third quarter. With their 19 points in the quarter the Eagles were able to cut Woodruff's lead to 39-38 heading into the final period of competition. In the fourth quarter the Eagles outscored the Wolverines 20-14 on their way to the five-point victory. The big impact down the stretch came from Kaylob Blanton who scored 14 of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter, while going five of eight from the free throw line. Blanton's 19 points led all scorers on the court Monday night, but he was joined in double figures by teammate Daniel Wease who ended the night with 12 points. Nick McConnell led the way for Woodruff with 16 points while Hunter West joined him in double figures with 11 points of his own. GIRLS GAME The Chesnee girls' basketball team made the same long trek down Highway 221 that their male classmates did on Monday night and came back with equal success as they defeated Woodruff 60-44 in a non-region matchup. Chesnee took an early 19-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter as Olivia Tolleson (6) and Pearl Holloway (5) combined to scored 11 of the team's 19 points in the quarter. The Eagles continued to build on their lead thanks to some great shooting from Tolleson who scored nine of the team's 13 points in the quarter on the way to a 32-23 halftime lead. Tolleson kept her strong play up in the third quarter as she once again led the team in scoring for the quarter with six points as the Eagles pushed their lead to a 15-point advantage at 46-31 over the Wolverines. Tolleson was the leading scorer for the Eagles in three of the four quarters as well as for the game with her game high 25-point night. Chesnee made it four straight quarters they outscored the Wolverines as they won the fourth quarter 14-13 on their way to the 60-44 victory. While Tolleson led the Eagles with 25 points, she was also joined in double-figures by Pearl Holloway who had 17 points and Nykerria Proctor who had 10 points of her own. Both Chesnee teams will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Inman, SC to take on the Chapman Panthers in a rematch from last week. Comments are closed.
