The Chesnee softball team used two dominant performances on the softball diamond to come away with a doubleheader victory over Blacksburg to improve to 5-0 in region play on Wednesday night.
"I challenged them before the game to come out and play hard and with intensity,” said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. “We have a tremendous amount of respect for the Blacksburg program but I don't want anyone to play harder and with more intensity than we do." The Eagles took game one by a score of 14-0 behind a one hit performance in the circle from Maddie Handy. Chesnee plated six runs in the bottom of the first inning as Ali Scruggs and Shenandoah Bishop had the big hits for the Eagles. Scruggs hit a two RBI triple while Bishop hit a two run home run for her first homer of the season. "It was great to get the first one of the season as it seemed to fire us up." Bishop said about her home run. The Eagles tacked on four more in the bottom of the second inning as Sam Carver hit an inside the park three run homer for the big hit of the inning. In the bottom of the third inning the Eagles added four more runs as Maddie Handy and Callie Burns had the big hits as Burns drove in a run on a RBI sacrifice while Handy plated two on a double before later scoring on a wild pitch. Maddie Handy pitched a complete game allowing only one hit with seven strikeouts. In the second game the Eagles came away with a 13-1 win over the Wildcats. In the bottom of the first the Eagles plated nine runs with the big blows being a pair two RBI hits by Mattie Martin and Kyleigh Thompson but the biggest blow came off the bat of Paige Scruggs, who blasted her sixth homer of the season. This time she hit a three run shot for her second homer in as many days. "She is keeping things simple and hitting the ball well,” said Fogle. “All the girls are taking that approach and having success." The Eagles added two more runs in the second off the bat of Shenandoah Bishop who picked up a two out, two RBI double. Blacksburg scored a run in the top of the third inning as Kayla Butler scored on a wild pitch. Mattie Martin hit her second two RBI double in the bottom of the third inning to add to the Eagles lead. Ali Scruggs gave the Eagles a great night from the circle as she pitched a complete game two hitter while striking out five. Comments are closed.
