Chesnee softball finished off a perfect region season on Thursday night as they defeated Landrum 13-2 to claim the Region II-2A championship. The Eagles players said they were nervous coming into the game because of what it meant but just prepared like normal.
"We were nervous at first but once we calmed down we started playing to the best of our abilities," said Mattie Martin. "We knew it wasn't going to be easy tonight," added senior Ali Scruggs. "We just prepared as a team like we've done all season." With the championship on the line Paige Scruggs pitched a gem for the Eagles as she pitched a complete game striking out thirteen batters while only surrendering two runs. "We wanted to work the corners of the plate inside and outside," said Paige Scruggs. "We wanted to make sure not to leave anything over the middle." Chesnee took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Sam Carver laced a RBI double to bring home Paige Scruggs. The Eagles doubled their lead in the top of the second inning when Ali Scruggs singled home Kyleigh Thompson, who had hit a double that rattled around in the left field corner. Thompson hit another double in the top of the third inning for her second in consecutive innings as this time the two out hit plated two runs to extend the Eagles lead to 4-0 over the Cardinals. The Eagles blew the game open in the top of the fourth inning as they sent ten batters to the plate and scored five runs to take a 9-0 lead. Kyleigh Thompson and Sam Carver each drove in a run with singles while Ali Scruggs drove in her second run with a RBI double. Hannah Henderson collected an RBI after drawing a walk as Mattie Martin also scored thanks to a Cardinal error. Landrum got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 9-1 as Abby Hammer singled and later came around to score. Hannah Henderson collected her second RBI of the game on a single in the top of the sixth inning but Landrum answered in the bottom half of the inning as Mckenzie Suddeth picked up a RBI on a fielder's choice. The Eagles tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh inning as Kyleigh Thompson picked up her fourth RBI of the game with a bases loaded walk before Sam Carver added her third RBI with a single. Callie Burns also picked up a RBI as she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Paige Scruggs struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory and the championship for the Eagles. Ali Scruggs led the way with four hits and two RBIs while also being hit by a pitch. "It felt great to come up big on a night like this," said Ali Scruggs. "I was wanting to hit the ball well tonight like I have all season but tonight just felt different. I was really seeing the ball well and that paid off in the game." Kyleigh Thompson and Sam Carver each finished with three hits and three RBIs while Paige Scruggs reached base four times while also scoring a pair of runs. With the win the Eagles secure a first round home game in the playoffs where they will host the second seed from region II-AA. The Eagles will be back in action on Monday night as the host Broome with a 7:00 PM scheduled first pitch where they will celebrate senior night prior to the game. Comments are closed.
