NINETY-SIX, SC- The Ninety-Six Wildcats held off a second half rally by the visiting Chesnee Eagles with a late fourth and goal stop to seal a 27-20 win home win on Friday night.
Chesnee received the opening kickoff and needed just three plays to score as KJ Proctor found Kaylob Blanton for a 44-yard touchdown pass that saw Blanton break several tackles on his way to the endzone to give Chesnee am early 6-0 lead. Both teams traded possessions until less than eight minutes to go in the first half when the Wildcats Braden Mitchell capped a six play drive with 7:42 to go in the first half with a three-yard touchdown run to give them their first lead of the night as the touchdown sparked 21 first half points and 27 unanswered points. Ninety-Six's Zay King scored his lone touchdown on the night on the next Wildcat possession with a 13-yard touchdown run. Mitchell once again collected another touchdown, this time through the air, when he found Ladarion Waldrop for a 72-yard scoring strike to give Ninety-Six a 21-7 halftime lead. A pivotal play in the game came at the end of the first half when Ninety-Six stopped Chesnee at the goal line as the halftime horn sounded. Ninety-Six needed just four plays to build on their lead as Briant Witherspoon ran it in from 52 yards out to make the score 27-7 with just over 10 minutes to go in the third quarter. Chesnee also reached the endzone on the ensuing possession when Austin Bigford ran it in from 17 yards out to make it 27-13 midway through the third quarter. Bigford once again found paydirt as he ran it in from 3 yards out with just under 10 minutes to go in the game to cut the Wildcat lead 27 to 20. The Wildcats came up with another pivotal fourth and goal stop to end the game that was very similar to the play that ended the first half. Austin Bigford led the Eagles with 142 total yards with 116 coming on the ground along with a pair of scores. Eagles quarterback Kjay Proctor completed 12 passes for 208 yards and a score. Kaylob Blanton led the Eagles with 81 yards on five catches and a score while Hayden Webb racked up 86 total yards on five touches. Bradley Meyers led the way defensively for the Eagles with 6.5 tackles while Wesley Wilkie and Jayden Williams were second on the team in tackles with 4.5 tackles each. Braden Mitchell led the Wildcats with 186 total yards while 121 yards of them along with a score were through the air and 65 yards and a score were on the ground. Zay King ender up with 61 yards rushing and a score. Ladarion Waldrop led the Wildcat receivers with 114 yards on three catches and a score. Chesnee will host Liberty next week in a game to determine the #3 seed in Region I-AA as Liberty is coming off a 40-33 win over Landrum om Thursday night.
