CHESNEE, SC - In front of a large crowd at home that had came to celebrate the Chesnee senior football players, the Eagles dropped a heartbreaking 36-35 region game to Liberty on a play with just seconds left in the game on Friday night.
The Eagles used 11 straight rushing plays to open the first drive of the game with last one being a 3 yard touchdown run by Kjay Proctor to give Chesnee a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. On the Eagle's second possession they needed just 4 plays to score. A 20 yard run by Austin Bigford and a 35 yard pass from Kjay Proctor to Kaylob Blanton helped set up a 23 yard touchdown run by Austin Bigford to double the Eagles lead early in the 2nd quarter. Later in the half, after a 47 yard run by Hayden Wenn set the Eagles up at the 3 yard line, Bigford would power it in for his 2nd touchdown of the half and make it 20-0. Liberty would answer back in the waning seconds of the first half as Logan Smith would hit Kendrick Jackson for a 35 yard touchdown pass on 4th down with 7.8 seconds to go in the half to make it 20-7 in favor of the Eagles. Liberty cut it to a one possession game just 3 plays into the third quarter as JJ Hernandez ran it in from 16 yards out to make it 20-14 in favor of the Eagles. The Eagles would respond 4 plays later as Austin Bigford added another touchdown to his total as this time he ran it in from 28 yards out. Beniah Powers and Hernandez would add short TD runs for the Red Devils. Powers touchdown run was set up when Liberty recovered a Chesnee fumble at the Eagle 5 yard line. Hernandez 's second on the night would give Liberty a 28-27 lead with 8:58 to go in the game. The Eagles would need 1:13 seconds after the Red Devils took the lead to take it back. Adonis Burgess would run it in from 11 yards with 7:45 to go to put the Eagles back in front and an Austin Bigford two point conversion would make it 35-28 in favor of the Eagles. The Red Devils would respond with a slow methodical 18 play drive the aye the clock down to 5.8 seconds left. The drive would end when Logan Smith found Austin Smith for a 3 yard score. The Red Devils took the lead on a Logan Smith scramble on the 2 point attempt to give Liberty a 36-35 lead. The Eagles final play of the night would come of short of the endzone as the Red Devils clinched the #3 seed out of Region I-AA and the Eagles clinched the 4th seed. Chesnee was led by Austin Bigford's 186 yards on 16 carries and 3 touchdowns. Hayden Webb also had 52 yards rushing. Kaylob Blanton led the Eagles with 59 yards receiving while Kjay Proctor threw for 86 yards on 4 completions. JJ Hernandez ran the ball 24 times for the Red Devils for 131 yards and 2 scores. Logan Smith completed 9 passes for 123 yards including a big touchdown pass to end each half. Austin Smith would add 98 yards on the ground and 19 yards throw the air including the game winning touchdown. The Eagles will travel next week to Batesburg-Leesville. Comments are closed.
