Chesnee fell to Blacksburg on Friday night as the Wildcats scored twenty-one unanswered points to down the Eagles 21-20 on a late touchdown.
Chesnee Head Coach Bill Owens was proud of his team's effort but disappointed with the results in the second half. "I thought we played well in both halves, but momentum got on their side and they tilted the field,” said Coach Owens. “Penalties are what got us in the end tonight. I could not ask this team to play any harder than they did tonight." Things went Chesnee's way in the first half as the Eagles built a 14-0 halftime lead. Jacob Kimbrell got Chesnee on the board with a two yard touchdown run which was setup by Cole Hoskyns by pinning the Wildcats at their own two yard line with a nice punt and then recovering a Wildcat fumble to give the Eagles the ball at the Blacksburg two yard line. On the ensuing Blacksburg possession Chesnee senior Matthew Wood picked off a pass from Blacksburg QB Trayshon Peeler to give the Eagles solid field position. Chesnee was able to cash in the turnover as Jacob Kimbrell hit Jacob Aparis for a thirty-five yard scoring strike with under a minute to go in the half. Kimbrell was able to find Cole Hoskyns on the 2 point try to give the Eagles a 14-0 halftime lead. Chesnee would get their final score of the evening with just under six minutes to go in the third quarter as Jacob Kimbrell was able to hit Kyler Reagan for a sixteen yard scoring strike, but a missed two-point try would come back later to haunt the Eagles. Blacksburg answered that Chesnee score with one of their own as Michael Hull scored on a two yard run to cut Chesnee's lead to thirteen. Blacksburg would add another score on the first play of the fourth quarter on a three yard Trayshon Peeler run. The Wildcats would miss the extra point but the momentum had swung to Wildcats as they pulled within seven points. The teams would trade turnovers as a Trayshon Peeler interception for Blacksburg was followed on the very next play by a Rodney Alexander fumble recovery to give the Eagles the ball back. With under a minute to go Blacksburg had one last chance. Trayshon Peeler was able to connect on a pass to Dee Wilson to give the Wildcats the ball deep in Chesnee territory. Blacksburg would then use a trick play as running back Michael Hull would take the direct snap and lateral it to Marcus Dewberry, and Dewberry was able to connect with quarterback Trayshon Peeler for a two yard strike to pull the Wildcats within a point. The Wildcats executed a beautiful two point conversion attempt as the entire Wildcat offense went right as John Ferguson ran his route to the left and Peeler was able to find him to give Blacksburg a 21-20 lead with :19.9 seconds to go in the game. Chesnee had several solid performances tonight especially on the defensive side of the ball as Matthew Wood recorded an interception and recovered a fumble. Cole Hoskyns and Rodney Alexander also had fumble recoveries for the Eagles. One of the biggest brights spots for the Eagles was senior running back Josh Russell as he finished with one-hundred fourteen yards on eighteen carries. Coach Owens was proud of the heart Russell showed. "Josh is a workhorse. He is like all of these seniors, he is the heartbeat of this team." Owens said. The Chesnee offense did a nice job of opening up holes for the bruising Russell, and he gave his teammates credit for his performance. "My linemen and every other guy out there put everything on the line and I put everything on the line. I played my heart out and so did they." Russell said. Chesnee will look to bounce back next week as they host Southside for homecoming. Southside defeated Berea 55-10. This will be the Region II-3A opener for the Eagles as they look to start anew. Coach Owens is looking forward to the new season as every team starts with a clean slate, "Our record is 0-0 going into Monday, and the only thing that matters now is what we do the next four games."
