On Thursday afternoon the Chesnee golf team returned to the course for the first time since hosting the TC Ezell Invitational on Monday and came away with a sixth place at the Ponderosa Shootout with a team score of 371, at a course many of the players were seeing for the first time.
“I’m proud of our guys today,” said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. “They were playing a course that none of them had seen and we’re making progress at the right time. This week, between the TC Ezell and the Ponderosa Shootout, we’ve gained confidence as a team.” Southside Christian came away with the victory shooting a team score of 316 but Chesnee with their score of 371 finished thirty-two shots ahead of seventh place in a field of twelve teams. Chesnee’s Peyton Lawter led the team on Wednesday with a score of 84 tying for tenth place in the tournament. Coach Pitt says he’s proud of the growth he’s seeing in his team especially Lawter. “Peyton had a solid round today,” said Pitt. “He’s playing with a lot of confidence. On a team with little experience before this season, it’s good that the one guy with experience is playing pretty good at the right time of the year. Our other guys are feeding off of his rising confidence. Hughtson Johnson also had a better day today as he cut ten shots off his last score. For a lineup that features so many young guys, we’re encouraged moving forward.” Chesnee will return to the course on Monday in a matchup against Broome at Heddles Hideaway as they prepare for the region tournament on May 3rd.
