WOODRUFF, SC - The Woodruff Wolverines downed the Chesnee Eagles 40-15 in a matchup of rivals that are located on the two extreme ends of Spartanburg County along Highway 221.
It took Woodruff just two plays to find the endzone to open the game as Kory Scott took a short pass from TJ Morris to the house for a 64-yard score just 31 seconds into the game. The ensuing Chesnee drive made it all the way down to the Wolverine 1 yard line but the Wolverines held the Eagles out of the endzone thanks to a false start and an incomplete pass on 4th down. On the next Wolverine possession, the Eagles managed a fourth down stop of their own to keep the Wolverine lead at 7-0 over Chesnee. The Wolverines wouldn't be held out on their next possession as big runs by Aiden Gibson set up a seven-yard pass from TJ Morris to Hunter West to push the Wolverine lead to 13-0 with just under 2:30 into the second quarter. With just under three minutes to go in the half, Chesnee got on the board with a two-yard run by Austin Bigford that made it 13-7 in favor of the Wolverines. The Eagles thought they had a big break on the ensuing kickoff as they appeared to have recovered a fumble on the play, but the runner was ultimately ruled down before the fumble occurred. Woodruff capitalized on the third play of the drive as Morris found Scott this time from 80 yards out to make it 20-7 with just over a minute to go in the half. The Wolverines increased their lead thanks to a 29-yard touchdown run by Aiden Gibson on the Wolverine's first possession of the second half that made it 27-7 in favor of Woodruff. Chesnee swung back on the ensuing possession as Austin Bigford scored on a 29-yard touchdown run to make the score 27-13 with just over four minutes to go in the third quarter. Woodruff answered with a touchdown of their own, a one-yard run by Kori Moates on fourth down made it 33-13 with 7:44 to go in the game. The ensuing Chesnee drive ended with the Eagles getting the ball back thanks to a wacky play. On fourth and 12, the Eagles threw the ball deep as Wolverine player came away with an interception around the five-yard line, but Chesnee's Adonis Burgess then forced a fumble and the Wolverines fell on it in the end zone. After initially being ruled a touchback, it was eventually ruled a safety that made it 33-15 with just under six minutes to go. Woodruff scored on their final possession of the game thanks to a 15-yard run by Kory Scott. Chesnee's Adonis Burgess finished the game with 13 touches from scrimmage for the Eagles for 139 yards while Austin Bigford ended the game with 66 yards rushing and a pair of scores. KJ Proctor threw for 132 yards through the air and 56 yards on the ground. TJ Morris finished with 13 completions for 270 yards and three scores for the Wolverines as Kory Scott had 224 total yards on eight touches. Scott also accounted for three scores, two rushing and one receiving while Aiden Gibson had 123 yards on 18 carries and a score. The Eagles will be off next week, but they will return to action September 29th as they host Landrum in the region opener as kickoff is set for 7:30 PM. Comments are closed.
