The Landrum Cardinals used a strong rushing attack led by Turner Ussery to down the Chesnee Eagles 21-13.
The Cardinals were able to use a ball control offense to help keep the Chesnee offense off the field. The Cardinals as a team ran the ball fifty-two times for 287 yards. Ussery led the way for Cardins with twenty-seven carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns. In the first quarter, Landrum got on the board first with a 34 yard pass from Micheal Clark to Kolbe Pruitt on 4th down to give the Cardinals a seven point lead. The Eagles responded as Dez Tate broke a few Cardinal tackles and turned short pass from Jacob Kimbrell into a 85 yard score. About midway through the 2nd quarter Landrum used a two play 60 yard drive to regain the lead, both plays were runs by Silas Phillips with the last one going for a 55 yard score. Chesnee would respond with 24 yard Ian Harris field goal with under a minute to go in the first half to give Landrum a 14-10 halftime lead. Turner Ussery was able to give Landrum it's largest lead of the night with 2 yard touchdown run that gave the Cardinals a 21-10 lead. Chesnee would respond midway through the 4th quarter with another Ian Harris field goal, this time from 25 yards out. There were several bright spots for the Eagles though as they held the Cardinals to their second lowest point total of the season and scored more points against the Cardinals than any team has so far this season. Dez Tate had a nice night for the Eagles as he finished with six catches for 138 yards and a touchdown. Cole Hoskyns also had a good night for the Eagles as he punted the ball six times and averaged 34 yards a punt with one downed inside the twenty yard line. Hoskyns was also one of several Eagles to play well defensively. The Chesnee offensive line played well again this week, a group with three sophomore starters. The Chesnee defense did a solid of job of keeping Landrum out of the endzone. The Eagle defense also held Landrum to under fifty percent on third down conversion attempts and forced the Cardinals to fumble the ball five times recovering two of those fumbles. Chesnee Head Coach Bill Owens was proud of the effort his defense showed against a strong Landrum attack, "Our guys have continued to work and work and work all week long at practice. I couldn't be prouder of them for their effort." Owens said. Ian Harris had a stellar night for the Eagles as he was 2-2 on field goals, and made another that was negated due to a Cardinal penalty. Coach Owens is pleased with his freshman kicker, " He is going to be really good, and he is good now. We are really proud of Ian, he has works extremely hard and he is very focused kid. We are excited we are going to have him for four years kicking for us." Chesnee will look to bounce back next week as they host the Blacksburg Wildcats at the Eagles' Nest. Blacksburg is coming off of a 50-12 win over Carolina Christian. Comments are closed.
