BLACKSBURG, SC - The Chesnee basketball team officially started the second half of their region schedule avenging a one-point loss earlier this season by defeating Blacksburg 66-59 on Friday night.
The Eagles started the game on a hot start that they carried throughout the game and have now improved their region record to 2-3 and sit in fourth place with three important games coming up next week. "We got off to a fast start tonight," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "In the second half we went to a pressure defense and really set the tone we wanted to have for the rest of the game. We have played all week with a lot of passion and the boys competed their tails off. It was nice to see the result of their hard work translate into a win." The Eagles got off to a hot start in the first quarter behind a strong quarter from Elijah Weese as he scored nine of his team's 20 first quarter points as they held a 20-19 lead when the buzzer sounded. Brady Poole also added seven points for the Eagles in the first quarter. In the second quarter the Eagles were outscored 14-9 as the Wildcats took a 33-29 lead into halftime but they got some key contributions from Coyie Poole who scored seven of the team's nine points in the quarter. "Elijah Wease shot it really well early," said Pitt. "Coyie Poole gave us some nice minutes off the bench as well." Chesnee used their lockdown defense in the third quarter to make a run at the Blacksburg lead as they outscored the Wildcats 17-8 in the quarter as they got key contributions from their preseason All-Region players. In the third quarter both Brady Poole and KJ Valentine combined to score all 17 of the Eagles points in the quarter as they held a 46-41 lead heading into the final quarter. Both teams battled hard in the fourth quarter, but it was the Eagles who came away with the victory after outscoring the Wildcats 20-18 in the quarter. The Eagles were led by Brady Poole who scored 12 points in the quarter but also got key free throw shooting down the stretch from point guard Carson Williamson who went six of eight from the line in the final quarter. "I thought Carson showed a lot of growth tonight," said Pitt. "He was a leader out there on the floor and really got all of our guys involved in the game." Brady Poole lead the Eagles on Friday night with 29 points and was joined in double figures by KJ Valentine and Carson Williamson who both scored 11 points each. Dre Buckson and Sam McSwain both led Blacksburg in scoring as each player scored 19 points on Friday night. In the girls game the Chesnee girls fell to the number one ranked team in 2A Blacksburg on Friday night. Both teams will be back in action three times next week as they host all three games playing Brashier Middle College on Tuesday, Greer Middle College on Wednesday (makeup game from last week), and St. Joseph's on Friday night.
