In the first game of the 2A Upper State series playoff game the Chesnee softball team fell 8-7 to Legion Academy in a road game that was a back and forth contest.
In the bottom of the first inning, after a pair of back to back singles along with a stolen base led to runners at second and third base with no outs, Paige Scruggs slammed the door on the Lancers as she struck out the next batter and got two harmless infield pop ups to end the frame. Legion Academy went back to work in the second inning as they loaded the bases and Malloree Sexton took advantage with a two RBI single. An additional run scored on a error to make it 3-0 after two innings of play. Chesnee responded in the top of the fifth inning with five runs which started when Ali Scruggs lined a double to the left center field gap to clear the bases by scoring all three runners on base. Sam Carver and Shenandoah Bishop each added RBI singles to make the score 5-3 after four and a half innings of play. The Eagles got a highlight reel diving grab to help send the Lancers down in order in the bottom of the fourth inning as Skylar Barrett caught a liner over the shoulder on a dive in left field with her back to home plate that robbed what was looking to be a double for Legion Academy. Malloree Sexton struck again for the Lancers in the bottom of the fifth inning as she hit her second two RBI single of the game to tie the game. Shenandoah Bishop and Maddie Handy each got two out singles in the top of the seventh inning before Bishop later scored on a single from Hannah Henderson for the Eagles to retake a 6-5 lead. Legion's Gabi Wilson drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6 and send the game to extra innings. Ali Scruggs delivered for the Eagles in the top of the eighth inning with a home run to grab a 7-6 lead despite a Lancer outfielder almost making an amazing catch at the outfield wall. Trinity Gibson tied the game for the Lancers in the bottom of the eighth inning on a wild pitch before Legion's Morgan Langley drove in Malloree Sexton to score the winning run. The two teams will meet again on Wednesday as the Eagles look to even the series at home with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Comments are closed.
