On Thursday morning in front of a crowd of family, friends, and coaches Chesnee's Dez Tate committed to continuing his college career at Newberry College next season. Tate played multiple sports with the Eagles during his high school career but committed to play basketball and run track at Newberry next season.
"Newberry just felt like home," said Tate. "Knowing that I will get to compete in both sports was a great opportunity just because I love the competition no matter which sport that I'm playing. On the basketball side they play a style that I think really fits my style." When talking to people at Chesnee about Tate the first thing that they talk about is his competitive nature. "He competed in about every event we had and if we had asked him he probably would have competed in the mile run or the high jump," said Chesnee head track coach James Davis who also coached Tate on the football field last season. "Dez is an all around athlete and I believe you could put him in any sport and he'll compete." Tate was named Region II-3A track athlete of the year in track this year where he also was region champion in the 200M and 4x400M. In basketball Tate scored over one-thousand points in his career while being named All-Region and All-State in both his junior and senior years. When talking to coaches of Tate they all talk about the legacy that he is leaving on the Eagles program. "Dez made a sudden impact on our program as soon as he started here," said Chesnee head basketball coach Andy Pitt. "He was All-State and All-Region two years in a row and was a leader but a quiet leader for our program. He led the team by example and has helped us to continue to build the program we have here at Chesnee." Tate says that he plans on majoring in engineering at Newberry. Comments are closed.
