The Chesnee Eagles used a total team effort on Wednesday evening to down the Union County Yellow Jackets in a match up of 3A foes.
”It's big because we saw them last year in the playoffs,” said Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley on her team’s win. “We told the team before it started that this was a big match because it shows who you might play in the playoffs." Chesnee jumped out to an early 10-5 lead in the first set forcing Union County to call a timeout. The Yellow Jackets would claw back and tie the game at thirteen forcing the Lady Eagles to call a timeout of their own. Chesnee responded with a 12-2 run to end the set to give the Lady Eagles a 25-15 win in the first set. The Eagles came out firing in the second set as they scored thirteen of the first fifteen points in the set. They closed the set pretty strong as well as they went on a 9-2 run to take the second set 25-7. Union County fought back early in the third set as the Yellow Jackets were able to lead on six different occasions and forced six ties in the early portion of the set. After Union County took a 7-6 lead Chesnee responded with an 11-3 run to take a 17-10 lead and the Eagles didn't look back as they took game three 25-15 to sweep the match. "We just refocused and cleaned up our passing,” said Jolley. “When we are passing we are a great team because our hitters can put it away." Abbey Ray had a big game as she had sixteen of the Eagles forty-seven kills. "She hit very well tonight,” said Jolley. “It was nice for her to get that and really be successful." Holly Hines and AC Yelton did an excellent job setting up the Eagles as they each had twenty-one assists while Yelton also added nine kills and seven digs. The Eagles had a total team effort on defense as they combined for forty-seven digs with Shelby Harris leading the way with seventeen. "They have been playing great defense,” said Jolley. “They’ve been scrappy and hustling after balls. They have really committed to playing hard defense." Anna Sullivan also had a nice night as she had four aces and two blocks at the net for the Eagles. Chesnee will be back in action on Thursday at Southside to open region play. Comments are closed.
