Latta used a three run fourth inning to down Chesnee 5-3 to take a 1-0 lead in the 2A Baseball State Championship Series.
Both teams hit the ball well. Unfortunately for the Eagles they hit them right at the Vikings, "unfortunately that's baseball you just try to barrel the ball up. In the 1st inning it just kind of fell for us and we got out to a 2-0 lead. Then we hit what we call the At-em balls , which is right at them." Chesnee stole the moment in the first inning as Kobe Miller was hit with the first pitch of the game and promptly stole 2nd. Williamson followed with a single to plate Miller. A stolen base and a balk later Williamson scored on a Nate Lamb sacrifice fly. Latta got a run back on a two out RBI double from John Malcolm George in the bottom of the 2nd that plated Pierce Watson. Latta scored three runs in the bottom of the 3rd that proved to be the deciding factor. Dylan Brewer, Pierce Watson, and Deonte Stanley had consecutive RBIs for the Vikings. Chesnee scratched across a run in the top of the 5th to pull within a run. Joey Foos lead off the inning with a double, and later scored as Dawson Williamson beat out a double play. Latta extended their lead back to two in the bottom of the 6th as John Malcolm George collected his 2nd RBI of the game. The Eagles battled hard all night and Head Coach Scott Wease was pleased with his teams fight, "that is what we expect from this group. They have battled all year long. They fought and they fought, unfortunately we did some things uncharacteristic of us this year." Chesnee starter Nate Lamb scattered 7 hits over 6 innings of work and struck out 10. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease was pleased with his senior starter, "other than that one inning Nate threw well. He didn't surrender much after that, and gave us a chance to win." "I tried to preach to the kids before and after the game that nobody got a trophy tonight. The State Championship wasn't won tonight. We have as good of a shot as anbody, and we are playing at home were we play really well. I like our odds at home, and if we get to game three everybody has a shot". Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease spoke about the importance of this being game one of a possible three game series. Game two will be at Chesnee on Tuesday night at 7pm. Comments are closed.
