The Chesnee softball team went on the road to finish their regular season with a 12-0 victory over Lewisville in six innings but it was also a historic night for one Eagles player. In the top of the fifth inning Paige Scruggs hit a n impressive home run to eft field for her school single season record ninth homerun of the season. Scruggs was one of seven Eagles players to drive in a run on Tuesday night and one of eight to score while ten different Eagles registered a hit. Scruggs finished the night two of four with two runs scored along with a RBI on her home run to go along with a double earlier in the game. Callie Burns, Mattie Martin, Emily Pruett, and Hannah Henderson each registered two hits for the Eagles on Tuesday night. Ali Scruggs was a perfect four of four at the plate with a RBI and three runs scored while Maddie Handy was three of four with a run scored and a double. Sam Carver and Paige Scruggs combined to pitch the shutout as Carver allowed one hit over four innings with five strikeouts while Scruggs scattered two hits over two innings of work. The Eagles will start the playoffs on Friday night as they host Saluda with a 6:00 PM scheduled first pitch. Eagles Baseball Falls In Regular Season FinaleUnion County defeated the Chesnee baseball team 8-3 in a non-region matchup to end the regular season for the Eagles on Tuesday night.
Cole Hoskyns got the start for the Eagles on the mound and pitched a strong two innings but with a first round playoff matchup coming up on Friday the Eagles limited Hoskyns pitches to keep him available for the playoff opener as his only blemish on Tuesday night was a walk in his two innings of work. The Yellow Jackets scored five runs in the third inning as Riley Huggins led off with a double and later scored on a error. TJ Betenbaugh, Willie Jeter, Branson Cook, and Bryant Whitlock each drove in a run for the Yellow Jackets with Cook coming away with a RBI double. The Eagles got three runs back in the bottom half of the third inning as Camden Burns led off with a bunt single before later scoring on Landon Thompson's two RBI double. Thompson scored on a deep double off the bat of Cole Hoskyns as Hoskyns came within inches of a homer as the ball hit the top of the wall. Carson Williamson pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth innings to try and keep the Eagles in it as the lone hit he allowed was quickly erased on a double play. Union's Tanner Hardin drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the top of the fourth inning before another run scored on an error to make the score 7-3. The Jackets tacked on another run in the top of the seventh inning as Brian Renwick scored on an Eagles error. Chesnee will start the playoffs on Friday with a 8:00 PM first pitch as the travel to the Midlands Dixie Youth Complex to take on Gray Collegiate in the first round of the 2A playoffs. The Chesnee softball team used a complete team effort to defeat the Lewisville Lions 11-0 in their final home game of the regular season as the Eagles prepare for the upcoming 2A softball playoffs.
"It was a good team win," said Chesnee's Paige Scruggs. "Everybody was hitting the ball and doing their job defensively. We did a good job of making adjustments when we needed to at the plate." In the top of the first inning the Lions got the first two batters on base but Ali Scruggs stranded them both of them on base as she struck out the final three batters of the inning. The Eagles exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning as Shenandoah Bishop, Kyleigh Thompson, and Hannah Henderson each had a RBI single. The big hits came off the bats of Sam Carver and Paige Scruggs as Carver hit a double to bring home one run while Scruggs hit a single to bring home two more runs. Maddie Handy added another run on a wild pitch while Hannah Henderson and Paige Scruggs added two more runs as each hit RBI singles. The biggest hit of the night came off the bat of Emily Pruett as she slugged her first career varsity home run, a two run shot, to put the Eagles up 11-0 to end the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. "It was great and I did not see it coming," said Pruett. "I couldn't have done it without the support of my teammates and our work in practice." Pruett joined a long list of Eagles to hit a homerun this season and that lineup depth is a point of pride for the Eagles. "Our team as a whole can play," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "We are happy for Emily and that homerun surprised no one in that dugout. She has been great in practice and has been doing well in the cage. Her hard work paid off tonight." The Eagles for the second time in as many games had two pitchers combine to pitch a shutout as Ali Scruggs picked up the win while Maddie Handy came in and made sure to secure the shutout. "They hit their locations and were mixing pitches well," said Fogle. "Lewisville got some runners on but we didn't panic and kept getting outs when we needed to." Scruggs tossed three innings as she scattered four hits while striking out three batters as Handy pitched the final two innings where she struck out four batters while allowing only three hits. The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday night as they travel to Lewisville for the regular season finale with a 7:00 PM first pitch. Chesnee honored seven seniors on Wednesday night and it was only fitting that members of that senior group led them to the 1-0 win over Broome, the Eagles twentieth win of the season.
Chesnee recognized seven seniors on Wednesday night before the game as they honored Sam Carver, Shenandoah Bishop, Eva Vaca, Ali Scruggs, Paige Scruggs, Mattie Martin, and Callie Burns. "To get a win on senior night is a great feeling," said senior Callie Burns. "We had to play our best to get the win tonight as we played an excellent Broome team." The game featured a trio of excellent performances in the circle as Chesnee got a pair of excellent performances from a pair of seniors. Sam Carver pitched the first four scoreless innings striking out seven batters while only allowing one hit. Paige Scruggs followed Carver with three hitless frames as she struck out five Broome batters herself. "Those two compliment each other so well," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "They were in the dugout discussing the game plan and how they wanted to attack throughout the game. Sam got us off to the start we needed and Paige kept us going like we expected." Broome's Karley Green pitched a gem of her own as she struck out twelve over six innings of work. Chesnee got a trio of singles to start the bottom of the sixth inning as seniors Ali Scruggs, Sam Carver, and Shenandoah Bishop all reached base. With the bases loaded Ali Scruggs scored on a passed ball which turned out to be the game deciding run on Wednesday night. "It means a lot to me to pick up the win on senior night," said Ali Scruggs. "We have been looking forward to this game all season and we didn't want to lose on senior night." After a one out walk by Peyton Sullivan put a runner on base for Broome in the top of the seventh inning, Paige Scruggs was able to strike out the next batter. The final out fittingly ended up in the glove of another senior as Callie Burns made a beautiful running catch in foul territory to record the final out. "We had a lot of different emotions heading into the game but we were able to put that behind us," said Burns. "I'm just proud to be able to contribute defensively as we played well as a unit tonight." Ali Scruggs said that the defense was the key to the win for the Eagles on Wednesday night. "We knew we had to keep our defense strong all night as early on we were struggling at the plate," said Scruggs. "Later on when we started having success at the plate we still kept playing well defensively." Coach Fogle said that getting this win on senior night was an emotional one because of the foundation they have set for the program. "I told them before the game I appreciate everything they have done for our program," said Fogle. "It was an emotional night for all us as this group as been with me for my entire career. It's going to be difficult losing them but they are leaving behind a solid foundation." Chesnee will return to action on Friday night as they host Lewisville with a 7:00 PM scheduled first pitch. On Monday afternoon after storms left the upstate of South Carolina, the Chesnee golf team hosted the Region II-2A championship at Meadowbrook Golf Course where Eagles golfer Peyton Lawter qualified for the state championship later this month.
Chesnee finished in third place as a team on Monday with a score of 364 just five shots behind second place Brashier Middle College, which would have qualified the Eagles for a spot in the state tournament. St. Joseph's won the region championship with a score of 331 on Monday. "It was a nail-biter," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "I'm disappointed for the team because we came a long way but we can use this as fuel to continue to improve." While the team fell short of moving on they did see ninth grader Peyton Lawter qualify for the state championship as an individual after shooting a score of 82 to also be named to the all-region team. Lawter was joined on the all-region team by four players from St. Joseph's (Joey Clary, Henry Hall, Cade Hagen, and Everett Babcock), two players from Brashier Middle College (Andrew Fugate and Bryson Paris) and Sutton Mullins from Greer Middle College who was region player of the year after shooting a 77 on Monday. "I'm proud of Peyton making all-region and earning a spot in the state championship as an individual," said Pitt. The Eagles will look to build on their success from this season as they will still be a young team next year after starting two seventh graders, an eighth grader, a freshman, and a sophomore on Monday. Lawter will compete in the state championship tournament that will take place at the Country Club of Newberry from May 17-18. |
