On Friday night the Chapman Panthers downed the Chesnee Eagles 12-1 in the final region contest for both teams as the win caps an undefeated region schedule for the Panthers and the loss puts the Eagles in a tie for second place with Broome.
Kyler Reagan got the game started with a lead off single for the Eagles before later coming around to score on a Blake Scruggs RBI single. Chapman responded by having the first six batters reach base in the bottom of the first and also scoring six runs in the inning. Ben Rollins drew a leadoff walk and would soon come around to score the first run for the Panthers. Paxton Tolleson would deliver the big blow in the inning with a two RBI single before Tyler Rogers followed with a RBI sacrifice fly. After allowing the first run to the Eagles Chapman pitcher Austin Parr had a pretty good night for the final four innings as he only allowed three hits over the final four frames and didn't allow a Chesnee runner past second base. In the bottom of the third Chapman added five more runs with Drake Pike picking up his second RBI of the night on a RBI single. Chapman added another run in the fourth inning on a Rollins RBI single adding to an already good night for Rollins who had already scored twice in the game. Chesnee will host Emerald on Saturday before a matchup with Broome next week to determine who will earn the second seed in region II-3A. The Chesnee soccer team made program history on Thursday night as they defeated Broome in penalty kicks for the first victory in the history of the Eagles soccer program. The game was tied at 3 at the end of regulation and after two scoreless overtime periods Chesnee was able to pull out the win on penalty kicks 4-2.
"Our first varsity win in program history could not have come at a better time," said Chesnee head coach Scott Faust. "We have gotten better and better with each game and our players fought hard and never gave up. We are so excited to be playing together as a team because when we do these kids can put wins in the books." The Centurions were able to get three goals in the first half but the Eagles defense led by goalkeeper DJ Chisholm really stepped up in the second half as they were able to hold Broome out of the net for the final forty minutes of regulation and both overtime periods. Chesnee got their first goal from Ian Harris off an assist from Ilya Shubentsey and Shubentsev later got a goal of his own off an assist from Carley Hammett. The Eagles got their third goal when a ball deflected off a Broome defender for an own goal. In penalty kicks Ray Romero, Fernando Bermeo, Ransom Ravan, and Ian Harris all made their kicks during that period and the Eagles also got a great save from goalkeeper Chisholm to secure the first ever victory for the Chesnee soccer program. Chesnee softball picked an important region win over rival Chapman on Wednesday as the Lady Eagles won 7-5. The win puts the Lady Eagles in second place in the region with a chance to lock up second place against Carolina next week.
“We are extremely excited about the possibility of a home playoff game especially for our two seniors,” said Chesnee coach Tripp Fogle. “We want them to get to play another game at home in front of our fans." The Lady Eagles got a single from Shelby Harris and a walk from Sam Carver in the bottom of the first but couldn't push across either runner. The single was the start to a big night at the plate for Harris as she reached base in all four plate appearences including going 2-2 with an RBI while also scoring a run. "It felt really good to come through for my team because this was a big game for us,” said Harris. “I knew I had a job to do and I'm happy I was able to help my team win." Chesnee got on the board in the second inning when Shelby Harris was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate Becca Watson. Sierra Bowen and Sam Carver each followed with bases loaded walks to plate three runs in the inning as the Eagles lead 3-0 after the second inning. Reagan Metcalf followed Miller with a RBI single to make the score 6-2 after three and a half innings of play. The Panthers’ Brooke Scruggs led off the top of the sixth inning with a single before Miller followed with a two run blast to bring Chapman to within two runs of the Eagles. Kyleigh Thompson led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single for Chesnee later scoring on a Shenandoah Bishop infield single to increase the Eagles lead to 7-4. Sarah Grace Byrd led off the top of seventh with a walk and would later score on a Chesnee error but the Panthers rally would end there. "This win felt really good because it was hard losing last night,” said Harris. “We were able to come out here and make up for it." Coach Fogle was pleased to see his team bounce back after a heart breaking loss on Wednesday night. "The first thing I told them after the game was that I was extremely proud of their ability to bounce back," said Coach Fogle. Chesnee returns to action on Monday as they travel to Chapman for a non-region contest. Landon Thompson hit a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the eleventh inning to propel Chesnee to a 2-1 win over region rival Broome.
"This was a big win for us as it gives a chance for at least a tie for second." Chesnee Coach Scott Wease said. "I'm proud of our guys for getting into a situation where we can control our destiny. I'm excited about the next couple of weeks." If the Eagles win at Chapman on Friday they will finish second in the region but a loss will put them in a tie with Broome. Chesnee's Austin Brown had a great outing on Wednesday night that was reminiscent of his efforts in game two of the AA State Championship series last year. Brown pitched eight innings while striking out nine including five of the last seven batters he faced. "I couldn't really do it without my teammates,” Brown said. “This team is really starting to come together and like Coach Wease told us we are playing our best ball in April." Broome starter Rylan Brown also was outstanding for the Centurions as he struck out seven while scattering eight hits and allowing only one run. With the game going to extra innings Chesnee also got a great performance out of the bullpen as Chase Carver pitched three innings where he allowed one hit and struckout two. "I didn't want to go in, and ruin the whole game after Austin had pitched so well," Carver said. “I'm glad I was able to pitch well and give us a chance to win." Coach Wease was pleased to see his two senior pitchers step up in a game with huge playoff implications. "Both of them did real well tonight,” said Coach Wease. “Austin Brown pitched his tail off for eight innings and just kept battling. Then Chase came in and did the same for three innings” Kyler Reagan got a leadoff double on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first inning and later scored on a Gabe Murabito RBI ground out. Broome got a lead off single in the top of the sixth from Harrison Howell before later scoring on Ethan Crump's RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-1. The Eagles Kyler Reagan hit a two out single in the bottom of the eleventh to get their rally started and would later score the game winning run on an RBI single by freshman Landon Thompson. "When Kyler reached second I knew that it was over," Thompson said. "I knew my teammates were behind me and we are finally coming through as a team and starting to play our best ball." Chesnee got key performance at the plate from Jacob Kimbrell and Curtis Stacey as Stacey finished 2-4 on the night with a double and a walk while Kimbrell went 2-5 with two doubles. "You expect the top of your lineup to always swing it well and when the bottom starts picking up you know it's always a plus," Coach Wease said. " I'm proud of those two guys tonight.” Kyler Reagan also had a big night as he went 3-5 with a double and a walk while also scoring both of Chesnee's runs. Chesnee will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Chapman. On Monday evening Chesnee High School introduced new football Coach Clay Lewis to the Chesnee community at a meet and greet ceremony at the school. Chesnee Athletic Director James Hyatt introduced the new coach to excited players, parents, and community members in a packed Chesnee High School cafeteria.
David Cantrell who has a son on the Chesnee football team is excited to see what Coach Lewis will do with the football team on and off the field. "Everything I have heard and seen has been great,” said Mr Cantrell. “We had a great turnout tonight and I think once people see his work ethic like he said it will be a great thing.” Coach Lewis stressed academics and doing things the right way on and off the field when addressing the crowd in attendance which left a good impression on those in attendance. "I liked the fact that he is going to be very strict on the kids academically," Mr Cantrell said. The community seemed to have a buzz of excitement after hearing Coach Lewis' first official comments to the community. Gerald Mills, who has worked with the Chesnee Athletic Department for over 40 years, was one of many who were excited about what Coach Lewis will bring to the school. "He seems to be a phenomenal person and a great football coach,” said Mr. Mills. “I liked the fact that he stresses academics first and football second." Chesnee High School introduced their new head football coach Clay Lewis to the media on Monday morning before a meet and greet with the community at the school later in the evening. Coach Lewis said that he was very excited for this day to finally get here.
"I'm very excited to finally get here and to get to meet the kids," said Coach Lewis. "I'm ready to start putting names to faces and to get to know the kids a little bit." Lewis is known for his emphasis on strength and conditioning and he said that it will be a focus for him with the Eagles. "It's like I told our kids, strength and conditioning is one of the most important things we can do to improve ourselves on the football field," said Coach Lewis. "It's not just about lifting weights and maxing out but it's about building both our speed and our strength. I want to make sure that our kids goal isn't just how much you lift but that they use the proper techniques and to do things efficiently that benefit us on the football field." At Hibriten High School in North Carolina Lewis' teams were known for winning lots of games and using a triple option offense to accomplish those feats and while the Eagles will look similar Lewis says that what formation it will be out of is still yet to be determined. "I like the offense that gives us the best chance to win," said Coach Lewis with a laugh. "We want to be able to run the ball and have an efficient passing game and we'll adapt it however we need to fit the personnel that we have with this team." On the defensive side of the ball Lewis says that the team will be a multiple 4-3 defense with the ability to switch up depending on the offenses they will be facing each week. "We base out of a 4-3 but we want to be able to adapt," said Coach Lewis. "Depending on what we see each week we will adjust to what we need to stop." Coach Lewis says that his reception when being out in the community has really impressed him and he's looking forward to meeting more of the community on Monday night. "Chesnee is a very neat community and really reminds me a lot of where I grew up in eastern North Carolina," said Coach Lewis. "I have enjoyed meeting a lot of people here and everyone has been real nice to me. The people seem to really support the football team and want to see a successful team and we're going to get there." The Chesnee Lady Eagles split a softball doubleheader with York on Saturday afternoon. Chesnee won the first game 4-3 before losing to York 3-2 in the second game.

The last walk went to Paige Scruggs to plate the third run of the inning and giving Chesnee and Scruggs the win. "All year long we have battled,” said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. “Sometimes you battle and you lose but fortunately for us this afternoon we battled and we won. I'm incredibly proud of them.” Paige Scruggs limited York to four hits and three runs as she pitched a complete game to pick up the win. Chesnee started game two in familiar fashion as they did game one with a Mattie Martin single. Martin would later come around to score on a Sierra Bowen RBI double but a good relay throw by York cut down a potential second run for the Lady Eagles. York responded with three runs in the top of the third as Ally Morales hit a two RBI double to drive in Kaiden Quinn and Madi Green. Bree Moss would later drive in Morales with an RBI single. In the bottom of the fourth inning the first three batters reached base for the Lady Eagles before Kyleigh Thompson hit a deep shot to the left field wall for a RBI single. 'Kyleigh is a good athlete,” said Coach Fogle. “She has been working hard in the cage and it is starting to show." Sam Carver scattered seven hits and struckout four over five innings of work for the Eagles. Chesnee travels to Broome on Tuesday night for a key region matchup. Chesnee had a big night at the plate and got a stellar performance on the mound from Austin Brown as the Eagles downed Carolina 15-0 for a big region win.
“I'm definitely proud of the guys tonight as we played well in all three phases,” said Chesnee head coach Scott Wease. “Austin pitched well and our defense was strong behind him. We also swung the bats really well." Austin Brown struckout two Carolina players in the first inning on his way to striking out nine batters over four innings of work. Brown limited Carolina to three hits and one walk while not allowing a Trojan batter past second base all night. "He has been one of our top two all year along with Chase Carver,” said Coach Weese about Brown’s performance. “He gets better each time he goes out there and we feel like we have a shot everytime he is on the mound." Chesnee got the offense going in the bottom of the first with back to back walks for Kyler Reagan and Landon Thompson. Reagan would later score on a wild pitch and Thompson would score on a Jacob Henson two RBI single to give Chesnee a three run lead after the first inning. The Eagles stayed hot at the plate in the second inning by adding six more runs. Brown helped his own cause by hitting a two RBI single before Jacob Kimbrell and Jonah Epps each drove in additional runs in the inning. Chesnee added four more in the third as Gabe Murabito collected another RBI with a single. Jacob Henson then hit a two RBI double and later scored on a Kimbrell RBI single The game ended fittingly at the hands of Brown as an RBI sac fly by Brown ended the game in the fourth due to the fifteen run mercy rule. Brown finished 1-1 with two walks and three RBIs while Jacob Henson went 2-2 with a double, a walk, two RBIs, and a run scored. Chesnee returns to action tomorrow at West Henderson (N.C.). |
