The Chesnee girls golf team made it three region championships in the last six days for the Eagles athletic program when they won the Region II-2A championship at the Links O'Tryon on Wednesday afternoon.
Chesnee shot a team score of 301, a school record, in the championship finishing well ahead of their next closest competition, St. Joseph's. The Eagles were led on Wednesday by junior Sydney Roberts who was named medalist and region player of the year after shooting a score of 71 on Monday. Roberts finished just ahead of her teammates senior Isabella Britt and eighth grader Olivia Roberts who both shot scores of 72 to be named to the All-Region team. The three Chesnee golfers were joined on the All-Region team by Greer Middle College's Raquel Fowler, Landrum's Eliza Whiteside, and St. Joseph's Emma Curran. Chesnee will be back on the course Monday when they compete in the Upper State Championship. With a region championship on the line the Chesnee volleyball team went on the road Tuesday night and took care of business capturing a 3-0 victory over St. Joseph's along with winning the Region II-AA championship.
"We are so excited about coming into a new region that's very tough and being able to finish first," said Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley. "The girls have worked so hard this season and deserve this region championship." The first set saw Chesnee grab a 25-20 win and was the closest set of the night for the Eagles. Chesnee won the second set in impressive fashion as they came away with a 25-13 win before closing out the game with a 25-18 win in the third set. Chesnee got a great game from two juniors Holly Hines and Kaitlyn Barrett as both players had strong nights for the Eagles. Hines finished the night with thirty-one assists, three blocks, and eleven digs while Barrett recorded three ace serves, twelve kills, and two blocks. Eagles senior volleyball player AC Yelton also continued her strong play for Chesnee this season as she also recorded three ace serves to go along with seventeen kills and seven digs. The victory extends the Eagles region winning streak to nine straight games and with a win on Thursday night at Brashier Middle College it will give Chesnee an undefeated region season. The Chesnee Eagles swept the Blacksburg Wildcats three games to none to get one game closer to a region crown.
"It feels good because we moved into a new region not really knowing what to expect, besides them having the defending AA State Champion," said Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley. "We knew it would be a tough region because Landrum was tough last year. So it feels great to come in and play so well." The Eagles came out on fire in the first set taking a commanding 8-0 lead early and went on to route the Wildcats 25-5 in the first set. The second set was very similar as the Eagles came out on fire once again establishing an early 10-2 lead and kept the momentum going as they won the second set by a score of 25-6. The Wildcats put up a valiant fight in the third set as it was the closest of the three, but the Eagles pulled out a 25-10 win to finish off the victory. "It feels great and it's even better since we felt like might not even get here," said Chesnee senior AC Yelton. "We didn't know if we would have a season but we worked hard just the same. Now we are starting to see the rewards of that." The Eagles were led by Yelton and fellow senior Shenandoah Bishop as Yelton finished the night with twelve kills and four aces while Bishop finished with five digs and five aces. Yelton is proud of the legacy that she and her fellow senior class is leaving behind as they close in on a second consecutive region title. "I love Chesnee," said Yelton. "I've always lived here and went to school here. Just knowing that we are apart of something big in this program is great and knowing when we come to watch the younger players to know we were a part of building this program." Chesnee got solid production from all five of their seniors including Yelton, Bishop, Karlee Swaney, Ali Scruggs, and Jessa Beach. "They are amazing and their work ethic is unbelievable," said Jolley. "They have been great leaders in this program." Holly Hines and Katelyn Barrett also had good night's for the Eagles as Hines finished with seventeen assists and four aces while Barrett had ten kills and three aces. The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday in a road match against St. Joseph's before traveling to Brashier Middle College on Thursday. Chesnee rolled up over four hundred yards of offense on the ground Friday night against Landrum to win 40-14 and claim the Region II-2A championship. With the win the Eagles also claim the right to host a playoff game in the first round of the 2A playoffs.
"It feels good but I was just telling the kids that we have one more region game and we don't want to share the title with anybody," said Chesnee head coach Clay Lewis. "I'm very proud of the kids and their effort. We have to put this behind us and get ready for Blacksburg." Chesnee players were very happy with the accomplishment Friday night including their senior quarterback Nyquille O'Fair. "It feels great," said O'Fair. "It's something that we have been preparing for all summer and all this week. This is something we have been looking forward to and I'm just glad we had a shot to do it." The region title is the eleventh in school history and the first since 2014. Chesnee's offense, behind their affectionately named "Pancake Platoon" offensive line, steamrolled the Cardinals defense for four hundred and forty-six yards on the ground. Landrum took the opening kickoff right down the field and capped off a seven play drive with a Bobby Dodd touchdown run from eleven yards out to put the Cardinals up 7-0 while only using two minutes and thirty-two seconds off of the game clock. The big play of the drive for Landrum came through the air as Cooper Gentry found Austin Harris for a thirty-six yard gain to set up the score. Chesnee responded with a ten play drive that ended when Nyquille O'Fair kept the ball and raced around the right side twenty-two yards to reach the endzone to pull the Eagles back even with the Cardinals at 7-7. "I saw they were going to let me run and I was going to take advantage of it," said O'Fair. "My blocking was great on that play." After the Chesnee defense forced Landrum to punt, O'Fair and the Chesnee rushing attack got back to work as Praise Edrington led the way for the Eagles. Edrington had three carries on the drive for thirty-one yards with this final carry of the drive resulting in a score from four yards out to give the Eagles a 14-7 lead early in the 2nd quarter. Both teams exchanged long drives that ended in punts but Landrum was able to pull back even when Bobby Dodd raced around the left side of the line and scored on a eighty-four yard run. The Eagles responded with a long drive deep into Cardinals territory but came away with nothing just before the half as Landrum forced a fumble to keep the Eagles off the board. Chesnee's offense got rolling once again to open the second half as O'Fair raced in from thirteen yards out to give the Eagles a 20-14 lead that they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the game. After Cole Hoskyns forced a Cardinals fumble, the Chesnee offense got rolling once again this time led by the B-backs Adam Parks and Camden Burns. The duo gained fifty-six of the sixty-four yards the Eagles picked up on the drive and the drive was capped off by O'Fair's third touchdown of the night, this time from two yards out to give Chesnee a 26-14 lead after the two point try failed. The Eagles defense forced another three and out before Bryson Thompson scored his first touchdown of the night from twenty-one yards out to increase the Eagle's lead to 33-14 midway through the fourth quarter. After another fumble recovery by the Chesnee defense, Adam Parks toted the rock five of the six plays on the ensuing drive capping it off with a two yard score to increase the Eagle's lead to 40-14 with just over four minutes left. Chesnee outgained the Cardinals 476-249 while the Eagles picked up an impressive thirty-two first downs. The Eagles had four different players reach the end zone but Chesnee's leading rusher was senior Camden Burns who finished with one hundred and twenty-eight yards on sixteen carries. O'Fair finished just shy of the century mark as he had ninety-five yards on fourteen carries to go along with his three scores. Corey Seay, one of the key members of the Eagles Pancake Platoon, had a big night defensively as he led the Eagles with three and a half tackles along with a big tackle for loss. Davion Stradford and Brandon Mills had three tackles each for the Eagles as Chesnee had sixteen different players register a tackle. Bobby Dodd led the way for the Cardinals with four carries for ninety-three yards along with a pair of scores. Cooper Gentry went 8-15 through the air for ninety-six yards. The Eagles will be back at Eagle's Nest to celebrate senior night and a Region II-2A championship as they host the Blacksburg Wildcats. The Wildcats fell this week to Midland Valley 27-13 in a non-region matchup On Thursday the Chesnee volleyball team kept their winning streak going as they improved to 7-0 on the season in region play with a 3-0 road victory over the Landrum Cardinals.
The match was in the Eagles hands most of the night as they won the first set 25-17, the second set 25-15, and the third set 25-14. Chesnee got a great game from AC Yelton who had eighteen kills, fifteen digs and three ace serves on Thursday night. They also got a strong game from Holly Hines who led the Eagles in assists with thirty while adding fifteen digs. In addition to the eighteen kills from Yelton the Eagles got a strong performance at the net by Ali Scruggs who had four blocks and Jessa Beach who recorded three blocks of her own. They were joined by Kaitlyn Barrett who recorded nine kills and twelve digs on Thursday night. Shenandoah Bishop also had a good night for the Eagles as she recorded fourteen digs with two ace serves. Chesnee will look to continue their winning ways next week as they finish up region play with a home match Monday against Blacksburg before going on the road Tuesday to St. Josephs and Thursday to Brashier Middle College. The Chesnee Eagles volleyball team kept their undefeated streak going in region play as they defeated Greer Middle College 3-0 in front of their home crowd on Tuesday night.
Chesnee controlled most of the match as they won the first set 25-11 and the third set 25-12. The only set that caused the Eagles many struggles was the second set as it was a nail biter with Chesnee picking up the 25-23 set win. The Eagles had another solid night on Tuesday from Kaitlyn Barrett who recorded eighteen kills to go along with twelve digs while they also got strong play at the net from Jessa Beach who recorded eight kills of her own. Holly Hines led Chesnee with thirty-six assists while Shenandoah Bishop had another strong performance at the libero position recording fifteen digs to go along with four service aces. Chesnee will return to action on Thursday in a road matchup against Landrum before finishing up their region schedule next week with matches against Blacksburg, St. Josephs, and Brashier Middle College on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Chesnee used a steady ground game and big plays to pull out a 45-19 win over the St Joseph's Knights to improve to 2-0 in region play.
"We did a much better job this week of playing a complete four quarters," said Chesnee head coach Clay Lewis. "We still have things we need to work on, but did a much better job than we did last week." Chesnee's defense got the game started with a quick three and out to set the offense up in excellent field position. A thirty-nine yard pass from Nyquille O'Fair to Dylan Bennett helped set up a Camden Burns nine yard touchdown run to put Chesnee up by seven midway through the first quarter. After another good stop by the Eagles defense, Chesnee quickly struck back as O'Fair found a wide open Cole Hoskyns for a thirty-eight yard scoring strike that doubled the Chesnee lead. "That play is a credit to the coaches," said Hoskyns. "That play worked because of the way our offense is drawn up with the motions. It was all Coach Lewis game plan and Nyquille was able to put the ball in the right spot." After stopping the Knights deep in Eagles territory and ending a twelve play drive the Eagles coughed up the ball at their own five yard line. The Knights capitalized on the next play as Harrison Scott ran it in from five yards out but Chesnee regained some momentum as Corey Seay blocked the point after attempt. The Eagles responded quickly as Hoskyns caught the ensuing kickoff on a dead sprint and raced sixty-six yards for the score with a beautiful stiff arm to the kicker and dove into the endzone to finish off the run. The score gave Chesnee a 21-6 lead with 5:57 remaining in the first half. "They never believed me in practice and I joked with Coach Davis about putting me back deep," said Hoskyns. "I knew if I ran wide open I would score." St. Joseph's responded on the next possession as they chewed up over five minutes off the clock on an eleven play drive that ended in a twenty-eight yard Harrison Scott run. The score would lead to a 21-13 halftime lead for the Eagles. Chesnee received the second half kickoff and four plays later Camden Burns rumbled in from forty-nine yards out to give Chesnee a 28-13 lead with 9:47 left in the third quarter. The next Knight's possession ended with a KJ Valentine fumble recovery that led to an Ian Harris thirty-four yard field goal to increase the Chesnee lead to 31-13 with 5:23 left in the third. The ensuing Knight's possession ended the same way as the prior possession with the ball in the hands of KJ Valentine, this time an interception. "That is a tough offense to defend and I thought our defense played well," said Lewis. "We gave up a couple of plays, but overall I thought we played real well." The Eagles cashed in on the turnover as Adam Parks rumbled in from twenty-eight yards out for his second touchdown of the season. That would give Chesnee a 38-13 lead. St. Joseph's responded with a nine play drive that ended with a Jack Murphy one yard touchdown run. The Knights tried an onside kick that Matthew Froemel corralled to retain possession for the Eagles. Chesnee iced the game with a thirteen play drive that chewed over seven minutes off the clock that ended in a Michael Paslawski three yard run to cap the scoring. Chesnee once again got a big night from Camden Burns and Adam Parks as the duo combined for one hundred and fifty-six yards on eighteen carries and a pair of scores. Burns accounted for eighty-four yards and a score while Parks added seventy-two yards and a score. Chesnee also got a big game from their defensive ends as Colby Davis had seven and a half tackles and Cole Hoskyns had six tackles while linebacker Grant Webb also had a six tackles for the Eagles. The Eagles will hit the road for the first time next week as the travel up Highway 11 to take on the Landrum Cardinals, who pulled out a 29-27 win over the Blacksburg Wildcats On the first day of October the Chesnee Eagles girls golf team started the month off with an impressive second place finish at the Lady Rebel Invitational on Thursday amongst a strong field of competitors.
“I’m really happy with how we played today,” said Chesnee head coach Kyle Scruggs. “All of our girls played really well today and we had one that was playing her first ever varsity match. Sydney Roberts shot a sixty-five today and you can’t ask much more from a kid.” The Eagles finished the tournament in second behind only 5A Blythewood on Thursday who shot a team score of 295. The field consisted of many of the top teams in the state which is something the Eagles feel will help them as the playoffs start soon. ”I think playing a field as strong as this one will really help us moving forward,” said Scruggs. “When we get to playoff time we won’t have to compete against a lot of these 5A teams and today we had Gilbert who we’ll be seeing at the state tournament. Gilbert has played us well in lots of tournaments this year and today as well so it should be a strong competition in the playoffs.” Chesnee’s Sydney Roberts led the team on Thursday as she won the medalist honors with a score of 65. Roberts was joined on the All-Tournament team by Boiling Springs’s MK Talledo who shot a 70 on Thursday as the Bulldogs finished eighth in the field. Chesnee will return to action next week for their region tournament at the Links of Tryon while Boiling Springs will compete in their region tournament at the Chester Golf Club on Monday. |
