CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee volleyball team welcomed a team from just across the border to town, in Thomas Jefferson Classic Academy, on Wednesday afternoon and sent them home with a 3-0 loss as the Eagles grabbed their first win of the season.
Chesnee got out to a fast start as they defeated the Gryphons 25-17 in the first set before Thomas Jefferson fought back in the second set only to fall to the Eagles 25-21. With a 2-0 lead in the match, the Eagles left little doubt they were going to get the win on Wednesday as they had a basic replay of the first set winning 25-17 over the Gryphons. Chesnee was led by Pearl Holloway who had eight kill, one block, 24 assists, 12 digs, and two ace serves. Chesnee also got a strong night from Hayden Robets who had five kills, 13 digs, and five ace serves while Harley Grady had a strong night on the back row finishing the night with 14 digs. The Eagles will return to the court on Thursday night as they open region play with a matchup at Blacksburg. WALHALLA, SC - The Chesnee Eagles scored in all three phases of the game to pull out a 20-10 win on the road over the Walhalla Razorbacks in an out of region game on Friday night.
The win is the Eagles first road win over a school from a larger classification since October 23, 2020, when they defeated Airport High School 31-20. Chesnee's Kaylob Blanton first put his fingerprints on the game during the second play from scrimmage as he caught a 32-yard pass from KJ Proctor, but unfortunately for the Eagles the drive ended on an interception by Walhalla's Witt Austin. The teams then traded empty possessions before Blanton once again made a big play, this time on the defensive side of the ball with a pick six interception from twenty-nine yards out to give Chesnee a 7-0 lead with just over five minutes to go in the first quarter. "I saw the wide receiver setting me up for an inside route and I jumped it," said Blanton. "The quarterback threw it right in my arms, and I took it to the house." The Eagles defense forced another three and out to set up Adonis Burgess to provide another spark. Burgess took the ensuing punt 40-yards to the endzone to double the Eagles lead to 14-0 with just under four minutes to go in the first quarter. "I knew I had a chance to return it," said Burgess. "My teammates did a great job blocking to open up a lane for me to score." Chesnee scored on the offensive side of the ball in their final possession of the first half. The Eagles went 54 yards on seven plays that ended with a Carson Gossett 22-yard touchdown pass to Kaleb Swaney to make it 20-0 with just under two minutes to go in the first half. "Our defense did a great job early on to set us up with opportunities to build the lead," said Burgess. "We were flying around out there making plays." Walhalla responded with an eight-play drive that ended with Ivan Sanchez 33-yard field goal to make it a 20-3 Chesnee lead at halftime. In a defensive battle in the second half, the highlights for the Eagles was 67-yards rushing by Austin Bigford and a Jayden Williams interception. Walhalla cut the score to 20-10 with just over three minutes to go tin the game hanks to a five-yard run by Silas Parrish. The Razorbacks went for an onside kick, but it was recovered by Chesnee's Kale Thrift. Kaylob Blanton led the Eagles with 98 total yards with 80 of those coming through the air on four catches as he also had a 29- yard pick six. Carson Gossett completed twelve passes for the Eagles 103 yards and a score while Kaleb Swaney finished with two catches for 28 yards and a score. Walhalla's Tanner Lowery completed nine passes for 67 yards while Silas Parrish finished with 36 yards rushing on six carries and a score for the Razorbacks. Chesnee will be back in action next Friday vs R-S Central, who is coming off a bye week as kickoff is set for 7:30 PM. |
