CHESNEE, SC - As the region and state tournaments for golf quickly approach, the Chesnee boys golf team is playing some of its best golf at the most important time of the season arrives.
After shooting a competitive 345 at the TC Ezell Tournament last week against some of the best teams in the state, the Chesnee boys golf team has backed that up with two strong performances this week to improve to 12-1 in match play this year. "We are rounding into form at a good time," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "It's the time of the year we need our best and we are starting to see that from our guys. We have one more tune-up before region as we'll go to Landrum on Thursday." At the TC Ezell Tournament, an annual tournament honoring the former Chesnee principal at Meadowbrook Golf Course, the Eagles saw Creighton Rentz lead the team with a low score of 75. Against Newberry on Monday, the Eagles defeated the Bulldogs 166-187, where Peyton Lawter won the medalist honors with a score of 38 followed by Rentz at 39. On Tuesday the Eagles backed that performance up with a 163-188 victory over Liberty at Meadowbrook, where Rentz was the medalist with a score of 35 as Lawter shot a 39. Chesnee also honored senior Jackson Ramsey on Tuesday prior to the match against Liberty at Meadowbrook. The Eagles will travel to the Links O'Tryon to face Landrum on Thursday before returning to Meadowbrook Golf Course for the region championship on Monday. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee baseball team used an all-around effort to down the Newberry Bulldogs 6-4 to advance in the winner's bracket of the AA District III playoffs on Tuesday night.
Newberry got off to a hot start as Adam Reifsnyder hit a leadoff single before Myquan Darby followed with a homerun that hooked just a few feet inside the left field foul pole to give the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead. That wasn't the only pressure the Bulldogs put on the Eagles as Chesnee pitcher Paul Martin bounced back with strikeout before the next three batters all reached base to load the bases. Martin responded with a fielder's choice out at home and a strikeout to end the frame. Chesnee's Carson Williamson drew a leadoff walk to open the bottom of the first inning prior to stealing second base and scoring on Ethan Lawson's RBI double to cut the Bulldog lead to 2-1. Martin bounced back in the top of the second inning as he only allowed a leadoff walk and started a string of six straight batters retired in a row. Martin and Eli Henderson each hit singles to open the bottom of the second innings but were stranded there. Kohen Orr and Tucker Johnson provided a spark in the top of the fourth inning for the Eagles with back-to-back walks. After Ethan Lawson moved them over with a sacrifice bunt, Carson Gossett drove them in with a double for two RBIs. "It felt great off the bat," said Gossett. "I knew I had to come through for my guys, especially in the playoffs." Gossett used his speed on the base paths as Paul Martin hit a screaming liner to centerfield where Ty Abrams made a great catch, but the distance the ball traveled for the out combined with Gossett's speed allowed him to score from second base to make it 4-2 in favor of the Eagles. "I knew I was going to tag up and go third when it was caught," said Gossett. "Next thing I know Coach Wease is making me round third base and I was wondering what happened." The Bulldogs responded in the top of the fourth inning as Bryce Satterwhite hit a leadoff single before later scoring on Adam Reifsnyder's single to cut the Eagle lead to 4-3. Chesnee's Kohen Orr drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the fifth innings, before later stealing both second and third base. Carson Gossett followed by drawing a walk and steal second base before Paul Martin cashed in the walks with a two out single bringing home both runners to increase the Eagle lead to 6-3. A pivotal moment came in the top of the sixth inning as the Bulldogs were able to load the bases but Kohen Orr ended the threat with three strikeouts. "I have been listening to Coach Byers," said Orr. "Doing whatever he tells me whenever I throw a bullpen. I just focus on throwing the pitch, whatever the result is it's out of my hands." Orr had a stellar two innings of pitching to pick up the save as he didn't surrender a hit and struck out five of the seven batters faced. Paul Martin picked up the win for the Eagles as he pitched four innings while striking out five batters while going two for two at the plate with three RBIs. "My teammates supported me the whole time and helped me relax," said Martin. "That allowed me to focus on my mechanics, and that helped me clean everything up. They made a lot of plays behind me to allow me to do what I could." "After the shaky start he dialed it in," said Chesnee head coach David Wease. "That was the Paul we were expecting and why we put him out there in that position. He was able to give us what we needed to help keep us where we need to be pitching wise." The Eagles are happy to be in the winner's bracket this season as last year they realized how difficult it is when you drop your first-round game. "It feels really good to be in the winner's bracket," said Orr. "Last year, we took a tough first loss and had to battle our way back. Now we are sitting in a good spot, and we are ready to roll." "Last year, we lost the first one and had to battle back," said Wease. "We had a shot but came up short. We like the position of having to win one more and getting to sit back this year." The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday night as they travel to Strom Thurmond to take on the Rebels with a 6:00 PM scheduled first pitch. |
