INMAN, S.C. – The ‘second season’ kicked off on Friday night as the Chapman Panthers traveled across county lines for the Region 3-3A opener against the Carolina Trojans. The Panthers settled in quickly and pulled away for a 57-0 victory over the Trojans.
After a Carolina punt, quarterback Coleman Gray ripped off a 40 yard run on the first offensive snap for the Panthers, followed by a seven yard Mathai Scott touchdown run. Hudson Moss threw a pass to Scott for a successful two-point conversion, staking the Panthers to an 8-0 lead just over four minutes into the game. Scott finished with six carries for 38 yards and three rushing touchdowns in two quarters of action. Two possessions later, Keanu Na found paydirt on a nine yard run with 45 seconds left in the frame, which extended the Panthers’ advantage to 22-0. “No matter who’s in the game, we’re going to play fast,” said Chapman head coach Harry Cabaniss. “We’re going to play our offense and defense because these (younger) guys deserve to play the same reps as anyone else. Next week (during the bye week), we’re going to get rested. The workloads are going to look a little different and we’ll take care of ourselves.” Gray threw a pair of touchdowns passes on the next two series, one apiece to Shawn Cunningham on fourth and goal, as well as a 32 yard toss to Bennett Smith that made for a 36-0 lead with under two minutes left in the first half. On the ensuing kickoff, Hank Tolleson recovered a Carolina fumble and set up a one yard touchdown plunge by Scott for a 43-0 lead at intermission. Tolleson also recorded an interception in the second half that resulted in another touchdown. “It felt good as a team to get the shutout,” Tolleson stated. “We came together as a team, played as one, and that was the outcome. I saw the inside receiver cut out, read the quarterback’s eyes, caught the ball, and started running. Wherever my coaches want me (on the field), I’m going to play my hardest and give it all I’ve got.” In the second half, Colton McPeters hauled in a 15 yard touchdown pass from Josiah Moore, while senior running back Taylor Dunning found paydirt on a two yard run that provided the final margin. For Dunning, that touchdown meant more than points on the scoreboard. “It felt amazing,” exclaimed Dunning with a grin. “I’ve been waiting for that since my sophomore year, which is the last time I scored a touchdown. We just needed to see consistency from our guys tonight and that’s what we’ve found. We’re trying to go uphill in all levels throughout our entire team.” Dunning finished the game with seven carries for 59 yards, while Na tallied eight rushes for 96 yards. Gray completed seven out of nine pass attempts for 73 yards and a touchdown, while also recording three carries for 43 yards. Eight different receivers notched at least one reception for the Panthers. After two days of eighteen-hole tournaments against some strong competition the Panthers were able to outshoot the Centurions 195-247 in their region matchup. Chapman was led by Adeline Todd who won medalist honors after shooting a score of 41, which was just one-shot ahead of teammate Samantha Ireland who shot a score of 42 as both were the top two scores in the match on Wednesday. The Panthers will return to the course on October 3rd when they compete in the Smith Memorial at the Country Club of Newberry. INMAN, S.C. – Coming off a thrilling road win last week, the Chapman Panthers returned to Panther Stadium for the final non-region tilt of the campaign against the Union County Yellow Jackets. On this night, the Panthers struck early and often en route to a 57-14 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
Union County drew first blood just over 90 seconds into the contest on an 11 yard Cam Owens touchdown run. However, it didn’t take long for the Panthers to answer. Chapman dropped back into punt formation on its opening drive, but Coleman Gray took the direct snap and sprinted 80 yards down the far sideline, tying the game at seven with 9:09 left in the opening frame. Less than three minutes later, an eight yard touchdown run by Gray capped off a six play, 45 yard drive to put the Panthers in front, 14-7. Following a Yellow Jacket punt, Chapman punctuated a tidy five play, 70 yard drive with a swing pass from Gray to Bennett Smith for a 36 yard touchdown, creating a two-score lead for the Panthers. “The season is three steps,” said Chapman head coach Harry Cabaniss. “There’s non-region and you want that to prepare you for the second step (region play). That second step should hopefully set you up for the third step to make a run (in the playoffs).” A third down sack by Jory Aho led to another Yellow Jacket punt and set up an 80 yard touchdown pass from Gray to Shawn Cunningham, along with a Hudson Moss two-point conversion. Nearly seven minutes later, Cunningham weaved his way through traffic for a 65 yard punt return touchdown with 5:22 left in the half for a 36-7 Chapman lead. A 51 yard pass from Gray to Colton McPeters set up a four yard Mathai Scott touchdown run, which was followed by a 30 yard touchdown pass from Gray to Scott on the next offensive series with 27 seconds left in the half. Four minutes into the third quarter, Shamon Black took a pass from Josiah Moore around the right side for a 25 yard touchdown. Union County scored in the latter stages of the game on a 15 yard pass to provide the final margin. Nine different players recorded at least one reception for Chapman, which also included Peyton Hodge, Matt Waldrop, and Hudson Moss. “We did get everybody in (the game) tonight,” Cabaniss stated. “These guys work hard. There’s a lot of guys that work their tails off for us Monday through Thursday, that you may not necessarily see on Friday nights. Anytime that you get to see them on the field is a good night.” “We’ve just got to continue to get better. We’ve been preaching all season long about how good we can be next week… We have to keep the intensity at practice that we’ve had this past week. I’m excited to get back to work on Monday with these guys after we celebrate this one.” Gray completed 10 of 13 pass attempts for 268 yards and three touchdowns, along with four carries for 102 yards and two scores; Moore was 4-for-4 for 63 yards. Cunningham caught four passes for 120 yards and a touchdown, finishing with 185 all-purpose yards on the night. Chapman (5-1) will travel over to Greenville County to open Region 3-3A play against the Carolina Trojans on Friday, September 29th, with a scheduled kickoff of 7:30 PM. INMAN, SC - The Chapman girls' golf team returned to their home course at Village Greens on Thursday and when they walked off the course they had captured a victory over fellow region team Broome in a nine-hole match.
The Panthers shot a match low score of 203 which gave them an impressive victory over the Centurions as they shot a team score of 260. Chapman girls' golf team head coach Andy Pitt was happy to see that his team while glad about the victory weren't happy with not playing their best match which shows growth in the team. "We're glad we got the win but you can tell today that the girls weren't happy that they didn't have their best," said Pitt. "That's encouraging because it shows growth as a team and you can tell that they want to improve." Chapman was led by Adeline Todd who shot a match low score of 47 to earn medalist honors. She finished just three shots ahead of teammate Samantha Ireland to win the individual side of the match. The Panthers will return to the course on Monday when they compete in the Lady Patriot Invitational at Smithfields Country Club in Easley. The tournament starts a busy three days for the team that sees them also compete in The Jack tournament at Cross Creek Plantation in Seneca before facing the same Broome team on Wednesday at The Creek. LANDRUM, SC - The Chapman girls' golf continued their improvement as they finished runner-up in a three team, nine-hole match at the Links O'Tryon on Tuesday afternoon.
Blue Ridge, the region favorites, won the match with a score of 185 but the Panthers finished just three shots behind with a score of 188 and ahead of Landrum who shot a score of 208. Chapman girls' golf head coach Andy Pitt was proud of the growth that he has seen in his team and is happy about the direction his team is heading in as region postseason play quickly approaches. "I think that although we fell short of the region favorite Blue Ridge, we showed really well today," said Pitt. "I think we built a little more confidence today and we're headed in the right direction." Blue Ridge's Kate Cox took the medalist honors with a score of 35 on Tuesday but Chapman's Adeline Todd was just two shots back of winning after firing a score of 37 at the course after starting the day off with back-to-back birdies. The Panthers will be back in action on Thursday when they host Broome at the Village Greens Golf Course for a nine-hole match set to begin at 4:00 PM. CLINTON, S.C. – On Friday night, many eyes around the Palmetto State were focused on Wilder Stadium for a showdown between the Chapman Panthers and Clinton Red Devils, two teams ranked in the top 10 of the South Carolina Prep Media 3A poll. The matchup lived up to the billing and ultimately came down to one last play.
With no time left and trailing by one, Clinton attempted a two-point conversion. Amidst heavy pressure, Red Devil quarterback Shawn Richardson rolled right and threw a pass that was batted down by Panther linebacker Reece Lynch, preserving a 22-21 victory for the eighth-ranked Panthers. “The guards (on the offensive line) pulled,” Lynch explained. “They tried to run a little fake to the outside, but (the quarterback) was about to get sacked in the backfield, so he just threw the ball up and I knocked it down.” Chapman opened the game with a tidy four play drive as Shawn Cunningham caught a screen pass and sprinted 65 yards to pay dirt. Mathai Scott took the direct snap & converted the ensuing two point attempt, staking Chapman to an 8-0 lead less than 90 seconds into the contest. Clinton countered just over two minutes later when Richardson dropped back and hit Kadon Crawford on a 25 yard touchdown pass along with a successful two point try, tying the game at eight. “All week, our practices were hard, and we knew that if we played together, we could win,” said Cunningham. “Coleman’s my guy, so he knows that if he throws it to me, that I’m going to go get it. Our (offensive) line’s the best and nothing could happen without them.” Later in the frame, Dawson Walters knocked down a Red Devil pass on fourth down at the Chapman 16 yard line for a turnover on downs. Three plays later, Chapman quarterback Coleman Gray weaved his way through the defense for a 58 yard touchdown run and a 15-8 Panther lead with 1:39 left in the quarter. The Red Devils reached into the bag of tricks as Crawford caught a pitch from Richardson in the backfield and launched a pass along the far sideline to Keleja Byrd for a 35 yard touchdown, tying the game at 15 with 1:24 left in the third quarter. In the final stanza, a run-heavy approach – along with two big completions to Cunningham – helped the Panthers march methodically downfield, eventually punctuating the drive with a two yard plunge by Gray across the goal line for a 22-15 lead with 9:23 left in regulation. “It’s about having that leader mentality with Shawn, Mathai (Scott) and I on offense,” Gray stated. “The line was pushing forward up front, getting good blocks, runs, and busted out to make big plays. They did a great job.” During the latter stages, Chapman leaned on the running game on another drive deep into Red Devil territory. Facing fourth and goal from the Clinton two yard line, the Panthers rolled the dice but were stopped just shy of the goal line for a turnover on downs with 1:47 to play. For a team known for taking their time on offense, the Red Devils (4-1) moved at a crisp pace and went 99 yards the other way, scoring as the buzzer sounded on a five yard pass from Richardson to Crawford that set up the two point conversion attempt. “I’m just so proud of them with how they continue to get better and better every single week,” exclaimed Chapman head coach Harry Cabaniss. “Coach Watson continues to dial it up and get us better and better every week (defensively). We just continued to bear down… that’s all you can ask for. I thought we grew together as the game went.” “That’s one of the best teams in the state and we’re going to see them down the road. Coach (Corey) Fountain does such a good job with what they do.” Gray completed eight of 17 pass attempts for 150 yards and a touchdown, along with a game-high 17 carries for 177 yards and two scores. Cunningham finished with six receptions for a game-high 136 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Walters and Jaedon Moorman each recorded a pass breakup, with the latter resulting in a Hank Tolleson interception to halt a Red Devil drive. Lynch also notched a fumble recovery for the Panthers. Chapman (4-1) returns to Panther Stadium for a non-region home contest against the Union County Yellow Jackets on Friday, September 22nd, with a scheduled kickoff of 7:30 PM. GREENVILLE, SC - The Chapman girls' golf team made the short trek into Greenville County on Wednesday and came away with a victory over Wade Hampton at the Pebble Creek Country Club.
The Panthers defeated the Generals by 15 shots in the nine-hole match as Chapman shot the low score of 201 as a team for their first victory of the young season. Chapman golfer Adeline Todd led the field with a match low score of 41 to win the medalist honors as teammate Samantha Ireland just five shots back with a score of 46. Lady Panthers head coach Andy Pitt was happy with his team's performance as he continues to see his team improve in each outing. "I was really proud of the team as Adeline set the tone for us and was really solid," said Pitt. "Samantha Ireland played her best nine holes of golf of the year to this point. I can see the confidence building with the girls. We still have a ways to go, but it's encouraging to see their work pay off." The Panthers will be back in action on Thursday as they travel to the Green Valley Country Club to take on Traveler's Rest High School at 4:15 PM as they try to make it two wins in a row for the team. INMAN, S.C. – On Friday evening, the Chapman Panthers returned home for a non-region matchup against the 4A Laurens Raiders. On this night, the Panther offense scored early and often on the way to a 48-3 victory over the Raiders.
Laurens struck first with an 11 play drive – predominantly a rushing attack spearheaded by Nick Danciu and Denari Lee-Jackson – on the opening possession that resulted in a 35-yard field goal and a 3-0 Raider lead just under four minutes into the game. Chapman countered with three scores in as many possessions, starting with a six-yard pass from Coleman Gray to Shawn Cunningham with 4:41 left in the opening frame. Following a Laurens punt, Gray found Hudson Moss down the seam for a 54-yard strike and a 13-3 Panther lead just under two minutes into the second quarter. “We had to have a better mindset (this week), clear out what happened last week, and keep moving forward,” Moss stated. “That is a ‘fox’ play (on the touchdown reception) where you wait until the fake and then jet down the field. I ran down the middle, nobody was there, and went into the end zone. They were playing ‘spot’ defensively… our offense was able to run, run, run and when the pass plays came open, we hit them.” Less than four minutes later, Chapman faced fourth down and three yards to go at the Raiders’ 15-yard line, where Gray scrambled to his left and found Bennett Smith in the back of the end zone for a touchdown, which created a 20-3 advantage. The Panthers notched three more visits to the end zone in the third quarter on a nine yard Gray run, a two-yard Keanu Na run that capped an 80-yard drive following a Chander Cartee interception, and a 15-yard pass from Gray to Max Carter that created a 41-3 lead with 15 seconds left in the frame. Josiah Moore also threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Shamon Black in the final stanza, which provided the final margin of the contest. “We knew that (Laurens) was going to make us nickel and dime them down the field,” said Chapman head coach Harry Cabaniss. “Our kids bought into it. There’s nothing like leaning on the offensive line, which continued to open things up and we were patient. I thought that was the most patient I’ve seen Coleman and we took over the game because of it.” Gray completed 22 of 26 pass attempts for 219 yards and four touchdowns, along with 10 carries for 90 yards and a score; Moore was 4-for-4 for 61 yards and a score. Mathai Scott tallied 15 carries for 136 yards, while Na added seven carries for 44 yards and a touchdown. Moss caught five passes for 71 yards and a TD, while Cunningham finished with eight receptions for 63 yards and a visit to the end zone. Black also notched three catches for 53 yards. Chapman (3-1) will make the trek down Interstate 26 for a non-region road contest against the Clinton Red Devils on Friday, September 15th, with a scheduled kickoff of 7:30 PM. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Chapman volleyball traveled about ten miles to play a tri-match between both Boiling Springs and Landrum at the home of the Bulldogs on Tuesday night and came away with two victories.

Boiling Springs cut the lead to 13-6 before the Panthers went on a 3-0 run to extend their lead to 16-6 with an ace serve by LeCroy along with back-to-back kills by Alexa Steiert and Madison Elrod.
