INMAN, S.C. – At halftime of Thursday night’s game, Chapman senior Clara Gramling was recognized for surpassing 1,000 career points earlier in the week.
That wasn’t the only thing Chapman celebrated, as an all-around team performance propelled the Lady Panthers to a 71-19 victory over Spartanburg Christian Academy on Teacher Appreciation Night. SCA’s Lauren Burnette scored in the first 20 seconds of the contest, but Chapman responded with a 19-2 run, sparked by a Gramling three-pointer from the right corner. Caroline Garner and Rylan Ivey each found Kara Twitty in the post for a pair of quick baskets, while Krislyn Wilder knocked down a triple of her own. Africa Ackbar also caught a pass and made a shot from close range. “We were moving the ball around really well,” said Twitty. “It helped us find some wide open shots and take advantage of every opportunity that we had. I think it was good for (our younger players) to let them get the feel of varsity and touch the court in front of a big crowd tonight.” Chapman continued to keep things rolling, as Gramling and Garner each knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter. Later in the third stanza, Wilder and Addy Lawson each drained a triple, while Grace McDaniel added four points of her own in the frame. “Our shots were just falling,” Wilder stated. “We were putting a lot of pressure on (Spartanburg Christian) defensively. We were able to take advantage of that and force some turnovers to get the ball back on our side. I think this was really good for our younger players to step on the court and play with us. It gets them more comfortable with us every time that we set foot on the court together.” As the game progressed, several players made contributions on both ends of the floor for Chapman, including Elliot Miller, Peyton Holmes, Madi Blackwell, and London Jabber. Altogether, 11 different Lady Panthers scored in the contest. “Coming off of Tuesday, our mindset was to tighten up our defense,” said Chapman head coach Leslie Boyd. “Tonight, our entire team did a good job of taking pride in our defense and forcing turnovers. We had our Teacher Appreciation Night event, so the girls wanted to play well in front of their favorite teachers, and they did a good job of that. This environment was great to play in and it brought some intensity for our defense.” Gramling finished with a team-high 15 points for Chapman, along with 12 points from Wilder, nine from Garner, and eight from Twitty. As a team, Chapman made 11 shots from the perimeter. SCA was led by Emma Knox with seven points. Next up for the Lady Panthers is a home contest against Travelers Rest on Tuesday, January 31st at 6 PM. BOYS – SCA 61, Chapman 56 (Overtime) It took an extra four minutes to decide the outcome of a back and forth non-region contest between these two clubs. Ryan Hunter converted an old-fashioned three point play to give Chapman 51-48 lead with 1:17 remaining in regulation, but a Micah Spivey three-point play on the ensuing SCA possession tied the game a mere 12 seconds later. After a pair of Hunter free throws, Spivey made a layup with 13 seconds to force the extra period. In overtime, a Hawken Smith three-pointer from the left corner pulled the Panthers back within a 58-56 deficit with 1:03 left in overtime, but the Warriors made eight of their 12 free throws in the frame to hang on for the win. Daniel Johnson led the Panthers with a team-high 20 points, along with 14 points from Hunter. SCA was led by Micah Spivey with a game-high 26 points. The Panthers will return to action against Travelers Rest on Tuesday at 7:30 PM. GREENVILLE, S.C. – Chapman took the floor on Tuesday night with two goals – a team goal and an individual goal. They achieved both.
Clara Gramling began the evening with 990 career points and ended the night with over 1,000 as the Lady Panthers claimed a 66-42 victory in Region 3-3A play over the Carolina Trojans. Fittingly, Gramling surpassed 1,000 career points less than three minutes into the fourth quarter on a three-pointer that was set up by a pass from Krislyn Wilder, which staked the Panthers to a 53-41 lead with 5:10 remaining. The individual accolade was big, but Gramling was quick to deflect credit to those around her. “I don’t keep up with my points because I don’t want to think about it,” Gramling said. “I had no idea if it was going to be this game or another one (when it would happen). I was excited after it happened and thought, ‘Oh dang, I actually did it!’ I couldn’t have done it without Krislyn, Caroline, and all my teammates.” “It’s so exciting because you see all the hours that the students put into their craft,” Chapman head coach Leslie Boyd exclaimed. “You think about all the hours of sacrifice, about her teammates, and how she got here through great teamwork. Hats off to the team she’s playing with now and the ones she played with the past three years that really put her in the situation to step up and hit big shots.” Over a three minute stretch in the final stanza, Garner and Gramling each drained a pair of shots from the perimeter, which extended the Chapman lead out to a dozen, 62-50, with 2:20 to play. Earlier in the frame, Wilder weaved through traffic for a basket and Elliot Miller found Rylan Ivey in the lane for a close range shot and a nine point advantage at the time. “When I feel the pressure, I know that I have open teammates,” Wilder pointed out. “If I see that I have two people on me, I know that I can pass it out. I’m comfortable with everybody having the ball and taking care of it. When (defenders) start jumping on my teammates, it ends up creating shots for me.” Wilder opened the second half with consecutive triples in a minute and 12 second span, which put the Lady Panthers ahead by two. After Carolina had retaken the lead, a personal 5-0 run by Garner gave Chapman a 35-32 lead, one that they wouldn’t relinquish. “Coach Boyd told us to go out there and play (our style of) basketball,” Garner recalled. “The halftime speech was short, and it pumped us up. We were excited to start the second half and actually play how we knew that we could play. It was fun.” As for Gramling, she became the third 1,000 point scorer during Boyd’s tenure as Lady Panthers’ head coach, joining former teammates Paige Aho and Ke'Asia Anderson. “The ultimate goal in all of this was to walk out of here with the win,” said Boyd. “Those three (Gramling, Garner, and Wilder) have worked hard together, lead our team, and allow other people to step up like Rylan, Kara (Twitty), and more. We had a great night in the second half. I’m glad that Clara got her 1,000th point and the team was able to experience it with her with a win.” Wilder finished with a team-high 20 points for Chapman, along with 18 points from Garner and 16 from Gramling. The trio also combined to knock down 12 shots from long distance. Carolina was led by Trinity Mangle with 24 points. Next up for the Lady Panthers is a home contest against Spartanburg Christian Academy on Thursday, January 26th at 6 PM. BOYS – Carolina 69, Chapman 54 Early in the road matchup against the Trojans, Chapman played to a deadlock near the midway point of the frame on a pair of Colt McAllister free throws and a mid-range jumper from Hawken Smith. Carolina then used a 13-4 run over the next four-plus minutes to take a nine point lead into the second quarter. A personal 5-0 run by Shawn Cunningham pulled the Panthers within a baker’s dozen of the Trojans with just over two minutes left until the break. Harrison Bridges also knocked down a shot from close range just a few seconds prior to the halftime horn. Over a near-three minute span in the final frame, a Smith three-point play sparked a 10-0 Chapman run to make it a 59-49 contest with less than four minutes to play. During the run, Dalton Mahaffey knocked down a jumper while Cunningham also tallied a steal and fast break layup. The Trojans outscored the Panthers by five points over the final three-plus minutes to provide the final margin and secure the win. Cunningham led the Panthers with a game-high 19 points, along with 11 points from McAllister and 10 from Smith. Carolina was led by Zanterio Spurgeon with a game-high 20 points. The Panthers will return to action against SCA on Tuesday at 7:30 PM. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Chapman Lady Panthers concluded a busy week on Friday evening with their third Region 3-3A contest in a five day span, this time on the road against the Broome Centurions.
Chapman found a spark both offensively and defensively, which enabled them to finish the first circuit through region play with a 55-35 victory over Broome. Trailing by three entering the second quarter, the Lady Panthers quickly pulled ahead on a pair of three pointers – one apiece from Clara Gramling and Krislyn Wilder, respectively – by a 16-13 margin less than two minutes into the frame. Those two triples uncorked a 26-0 run for the Lady Panthers that bridged into the third quarter. “We embraced (the three region games this week),” said Chapman head coach Leslie Boyd. “When adversity hit us, we didn’t get down and stayed locked in. We knew each night presented a different goal. This team could’ve come in here defeated, but they didn’t and had their heads up, ready to play a great game of basketball.” During the run, Kara Twitty knocked down a shot from close range, while Rylan Ivey caught a pass from Wilder in stride and converted on a fast break opportunity. Wilder also tallied three more assists on a trio of Gramling fast break baskets. On the defensive end of the floor, Chapman put forth a stingy effort against the Centurions, which was highlighted by the play of Ivey, who drew a pair of charges for Chapman during that run. “We helped each other a lot,” Ivey stated. “If someone wasn’t there, then someone else was there to help (defensively). My mindset tonight was to just keep taking charges and playing great defense.” “Our defense improved as the week went on,” Boyd added. “I think tonight was top-notch defense. It started with charges from Rylan, bringing energy on the court, and turning the defense into offense.” Gramling became very comfortable behind the arc, knocking down five more three-pointers in the third quarter alone. The senior captain compiled a game-high 31 points for the Lady Panthers in the win. “My teammates did a great job of hustling to inbound the ball fast,” Gramling said. “We were able to work the ball and keep the spacing. Once you have that spacing, you’ve got the open shot. We had a conversation before the game... the word ‘execute’ has been big throughout the week and tonight, I think we did a good job of executing.” Krislyn Wilder also scored 11 points, while Ivey added six points for Chapman. Broome was led by Anaya Wofford with 13 points. Next up for the Lady Panthers is a road contest against Carolina on Tuesday, January 24th at 6 PM. BOYS – Broome 64, Chapman 60 As the adage goes, it was a tale of two different halves in this Region 3-3A clash between the Panthers and Centurions. Chapman jumped out to an early advantage just 42 seconds into the game on a Shawn Cunningham basket. A three point play by Colt McAllister gave the Panthers a double digit lead and sparked a 10-0 run for Chapman over the final 1:55 of the first half. A quick steal and layup by Cunningham to open the third quarter made it a 42-22 Chapman lead, but then the Centurions began chipping away. Broome used a 14-0 run that spanned four-plus minutes to trim Chapman’s lead down to 45-40 with 1:50 left in the quarter. A layup by Nazar Ackbar and McAllister jumper off an inbounds play extended it back to a nine point game before a pair of Centurions baskets cut the Chapman lead down to five entering the final frame. Broome’s Xavier Hill scored 11 points in a three-plus minute span in the fourth quarter that gave the Centurions their first lead, 55-53, with 4:59 remaining. Baskets from Brady Poole and Kamajay Brannon extended it to a six point game before another Johnson triple cut the Broome lead down to 62-60. With 17.9 seconds left, Poole knocked down a pair of free throws to provide the final margin and give the Centurions the win. Poole scored a game-high 22 points, followed by Hill with 19 and Steven O’Dell with 16 for Broome. McAllister finished with a team-high 16 points for Chapman, along with 12 points each from Johnson and Cunningham. The Panthers will return to action against Carolina on Tuesday at 7:30 PM. INMAN, S.C. – On Tuesday evening, the Chapman Panthers continued their first trip through Region III-3A play with a home matchup against the Blue Ridge Tigers.
Both teams battled from start to finish but when the final buzzer sounded, Blue Ridge held off a late rally by the Panthers for a 61-57 victory. Over the first 16 minutes of the contest, neither club held a lead larger than three possessions. Trailing by a point, two Grace McDaniel free throws and a Krislyn Wilder three pointer from the left corner put the Lady Panthers ahead by a 9-5 margin. A steal and layup by Blue Ridge’s Zi Henderson keyed a 10-0 run for the Tigers, which put the Tigers ahead by six points. A couple of moments later, a driving layup by Caroline Garner cut the deficit to 15-11 after one quarter. Trailing by a baker’s dozen entering the final stanza, Chapman put together a late surge. Wilder, Garner, and Gramling each knocked down a three pointer, while Kara Twitty scored seven points from close range to help the Lady Panthers cut the deficit down to one possession with a minute to play. Late in the game, Henderson (who scored a game-high 26 points for the Tigers) knocked down five of six free throw attempts to help Blue Ridge claim the win. “Even though we came up short tonight, we put forth great effort on the court,” said Chapman head coach Leslie Boyd. “Down the stretch, we didn’t execute like we wanted to, but we fought, and we do that every time we step on the court. It’s hard to not come up with a win when the girls play so hard for four quarters. We’ll put that same effort on the court next time (on Friday).” Four Lady Panthers finished in double figures led by Wilder with 20 points. Twitty tallied 13 points to go along with 11 points from Gramling and 10 from Garner. Next up for the Lady Panthers is a road contest against Broome on Friday, January 20th at 6 PM. On the ensuing Blue Ridge possession, Tucker Massey hit a three pointer and put the Tigers back ahead. Massey also made the next three out of four tries from long distance, which allowed the Tigers to take an eight point lead into the final frame. In the second half, the Tigers made 10 shots from long distance, which helped them secure the win. Isaiah Smith scored a team-high 16 points for Blue Ridge, followed by Massey with 15. Shawn Cunningham finished with a game-high 27 points for Chapman, along with 15 points from Colt McAllister. The Panthers will return to action against Broome on Friday at 7:30 PM. INMAN, S.C. – Chapman began their Region III-3A schedule against Carolina High School, where an all-around team effort propelled the host Lady Panthers to a 73-38 victory over the Trojans.
Prior to both home basketball games on Friday night, a moment of silence was held to honor the memory of a Chapman High School student who tragically passed away earlier in the week. “It’s been very tough,” said Chapman head coach Leslie Boyd about the week at school. “We’re a family-like atmosphere here. As for the team, we took time at our next practice (on Wednesday) to think about our main purpose: making memories and making sure every day that we put forth our best effort on the court and in life. We did a great job tonight of soaking in the moment, having fun, and making memories.” Chapman opened the game with a scorching 22-6 outburst in the first quarter against the Trojans. During the run, Caroline Garner knocked down a three pointer on consecutive possessions, followed by eight straight points from Clara Gramling. Adeline West kickstarted a 9-2 burst to begin the second quarter, which staked the Lady Panthers to a 31-11 advantage at the 3:29 mark of the frame. In total, 10 different Chapman players tallied points in the contest. “I’m very proud of our girls,” Boyd stated. “Krislyn did a great job of getting all her teammates involved. In the second half, Chapman began to mount a charge with a combination of shooting from long range and tough defense. Spanning the midway point of the third quarter and into the fourth stanza, Gramling hit four triples in as many trips down the court for Chapman, which gave the Panthers a 34-33 lead with 5:30 to play.
