INMAN, SC - Clinton's rushing attack is based on deception and misdirection.
Despite that, on Friday night the Red Devils were pretty straightforward. Clinton rushed 53 times for 478 yards on the way to nearly 600 yards of total offense and a 49-19 win over Chapman. "Our guys did a good job executing tonight, our coaches did a good job of preparing a gameplan, and I'm excited how it turned out," Clinton coach Corey Fountain said. "I think we did a good job mixing it up with the pass and the run. We did a good job of stretching them out vertically so they couldn't pack the box." There wasn't a breakout offensive star for the Red Devils, but Clinton was remarkably consistent. Bryson James rushed for 124 yards on 11 carries and scored once. Jishun Copeland had nine carries for 104 yards and three TDs. Jayden Robinson added 92 yards and a score, and all three averaged more than nine yards per carry. Justin Copeland rushed for one score for the Red Devils and returned a kickoff 70 yards for another. "Having three guys that can run it definitely helps, but none of it's possible if those guys up front don't block," Fountain said. "Coach Bennett did a good job of preparing them, and the backs blocked really well for each other tonight, too." Defensively, the Red Devils gave up just over four yards per play. "Our guys were locked in," Fountain said. "I think special teams did a great job, too. We started in great field position all night. We switched some guys up, moved some guys from the back to the front, and it paid off." Chapman got big contributions from Coleman Gray and Devin Roe. Gray rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers, averaging six yards per carry. He threw for 170 yards and two more scores. Both of those touchdown tosses went to Roe, who hauled in six catches for 96 yards and the two touchdowns. Chapman will be on the road next week as they travel to take on Union County in another non-region matchup. -Jed Blackwell |
