INMAN, S.C. – Chapman began their Region III-3A schedule against Carolina High School, where an all-around team effort propelled the host Lady Panthers to a 73-38 victory over the Trojans.
Prior to both home basketball games on Friday night, a moment of silence was held to honor the memory of a Chapman High School student who tragically passed away earlier in the week. “It’s been very tough,” said Chapman head coach Leslie Boyd about the week at school. “We’re a family-like atmosphere here. As for the team, we took time at our next practice (on Wednesday) to think about our main purpose: making memories and making sure every day that we put forth our best effort on the court and in life. We did a great job tonight of soaking in the moment, having fun, and making memories.” Chapman opened the game with a scorching 22-6 outburst in the first quarter against the Trojans. During the run, Caroline Garner knocked down a three pointer on consecutive possessions, followed by eight straight points from Clara Gramling. Adeline West kickstarted a 9-2 burst to begin the second quarter, which staked the Lady Panthers to a 31-11 advantage at the 3:29 mark of the frame. With time winding down, Addy Lawson beat the halftime buzzer with a three pointer from the left wing, which gave the Lady Panthers a 19 point lead at the break. Kara Twitty scored in a flurry, posting seven of Chapman’s first nine points to open the third quarter. Krislyn Wilder made an outstanding play in the frame, as she found Garner in stride on the baseline for a reverse layup, while Kenslie Edwards also scored twice in a 32 second span to close out the quarter. In total, 10 different Chapman players tallied points in the contest. “I’m very proud of our girls,” Boyd stated. “Krislyn did a great job of getting all her teammates involved. I felt like we got things rolling very quickly (in the first quarter). Once we get the energy up defensively, it gives us confidence offensively.” Gramling scored a game-high 17 points for the Lady Panthers, followed by Twitty with 15 and Garner with 13 points, respectively. Next up for Chapman is a trip to Travelers Rest on Thursday, January 12th with the tipoff scheduled for 6:00 PM.
