INMAN, S.C. – On the heels of a region win over Blue Ridge, the Chapman Panthers boys soccer team had a quick 24 hour turnaround on Thursday for a home region match against the Travelers Rest Devildogs. After jumping out to an early lead, the Panthers held off a late charge for a 5-3 victory over the Devildogs.
After three near misses in the first 20 minutes, Chapman broke through on a free kick at midfield. The ball sailed deep downfield, where Jakob Schall blew by a defender near the six yard box and scored with a header to the upper left corner of the net for a 1-0 Chapman lead in the 26th minute. Travelers Rest fired a shot on goal with a cross to the right side of the 18 yard box three minutes later, but Panther keeper Cody Benstead pounced on the ball for the save. The Devildogs later fired home an equalizer in the 33rd minute, only to see the Panthers net a goal off a free kick from 18 yards away two minutes later, staking Chapman to a 2-1 lead at the break. “We were in a similar situation against (Greer Middle College) earlier in the year,” recalled Chapman head coach Chris DowDell. “We had 20 seconds left in the game and gave up a goal that tied it, then lost it in penalty kicks. At Spartanburg High, we were up 2-0 and the next thing you know, we lost 4-3.” “You’ve got all the momentum going your way, but then you make a mistake and let them back in the game. We needed (this situation tonight) because we needed to figure out how to deal with that pressure and to close the game out.” Eight minutes into the second half, Mario Armendariz sent a pass down the middle of the 18 yard box, where Schall tracked it perfectly and netted his second marker of the night, creating a two goal advantage for the Panthers. Travelers Rest pulled within a one goal margin twice in the second stanza, which saw the Panthers take a 4-3 lead into the final eight minutes of regulation. With less than four minutes left, the Panthers netted a goal from close range in the six yard box that secured the region win and provided the final margin. “Isaac Andryushenko had a tough mark (defensively),” DowDell pointed out. “The guy he was up against was very good, big, and physical. Isaac has really stepped his game up quite a bit and I thought he was excellent. Matthew Steading was just steady in the back (line). The big one that sticks in my mind is Mario Armendariz in the midfield.” “(Mario) is so smooth on the ball and when he is playing with confidence, he is as good as any player on the field. His assist when he chipped it over the top to Jakob on the third goal was fantastic. That is a top notch play anywhere in the world and he is capable of that stuff when he plays with confidence.” Schall led the Panthers with a hat trick, scoring three goals to go along with an assist. Brandon Vallecillo finished with a goal and an assist, while Armendariz and Steading each tallied an assist. Tim Yakovenko added a goal, while netminders Cody Benstead and Landon Pruitt combined for three saves in the win. As a team, Chapman tallied 20 shots (11 on goal) and limited the Devildogs to six total shots for the contest. Chapman (8-2, 4-0 Region 3-3A) will return to action on Tuesday, April 9th, when they host the Carolina Trojans in a Region 3-3A match, slated for a 7:30 PM kick. On Wednesday night, the team responded as a big first inning powered the Lady Panthers to a 10-0 victory over the Blue Ridge Tigers in five innings.
Autumn Fisher and Krislyn Wilder reached safely on a walk and base hit, respectively, that put runners on the corners to open Chapman’s half of the first inning. Rylan Ivey drove in Fisher with a groundout, while Wilder scored on a Sophie Whitley single, staking the Panthers to a 2-0 lead. Reagan Garrett and Sam McPhail each earned a free pass during the flurry as well. Kayla Hardin (courtesy runner for Garrett) crossed home plate on a wild pitch, while McPhail scored on an error. An Addy Lawson groundout plated Kenslie Edwards (courtesy runner for Whitley) and created a 5-0 Chapman lead. “I was just super excited that we were able to get five runs in that inning,” said Green. “We usually start out so slow, so it was a nice change… five runs in one inning are a great way to start a game.” The Panthers showed off the glove work when Wilder made two great throws from center field to Fisher at second base, retiring the lead runner for the Tigers on back-to-back plays. Hailey Coley also made a diving catch in foul territory on the third base line, which helped retire the side in the third inning. Madison Manning walked with one out in the Panthers’ third and sprinted home on a Fisher triple to right-center. Fisher crossed home plate on a Wilder double to left center, which created a 7-0 advantage. “We practice going hard every single day,” Wilder stated. “When you have a ball (hit) like that, it’s a reaction for whoever is receiving the ball and whoever is on the bases, looking at where the ball is. I just have the confidence in my teammates to tell me where I need to go and where I need to be.” “We have put in work from the very beginning to get to where we are now. We all know that we have the potential to get really, really far.” The Panthers plated three runs in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk to Whitley, an Alexis Floyd single, and a wild pitch, which provided the final margin. Wilder was perfect at the plate for the Panthers, going 4-for-4 with an RBI, two doubles, and two runs scored. Whitley went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI, while Fisher was 1-for-3 with a triple, RBI, and two runs scored. Garrett drew three walks and scored a run, while Floyd, Ivey and Lawson notched one RBI apiece. Manning and McPhail also scored one run each. In the circle, Garrett tossed a gem and scattered four hits in the shutout win. “We spend a lot of time on defense,” Green added. “(Krislyn) is the type of kid that is always looking for the next out anyway, even if she doesn’t catch the ball in the air. She’s going hard and is going to make something happen.” “(Hailey) is coming into her own at third base. It’s not a new position for her – she hasn’t been there the past couple of years. She is getting more comfortable. She was able to read the hands (of the batter), crash in on the bunt, and made a great play.” Next up for Chapman (9-3, 3-0 Region) is a Region 3-3A matchup at Travelers Rest on Thursday, March 28th. The game is slated to begin at approximately 7:30 PM. INMAN, S.C – On Thursday evening, the Chapman Panthers welcomed the Chesnee Eagles to town for a non-region showdown. After a slow start, the Panthers settled in and emerged with an 8-1 victory over the Eagles.
Chesnee’s Skylar Barrett led off the second inning with a base knock, while Ansley Blanton reached on a Chapman error that put two Eagles in scoring position. Two batters later, a Natalie Morris RBI groundout scored Barrett and staked Chesnee to a 1-0 lead. The Panther bats came around with one out in the third inning as Autumn Fisher reached on a fielder’s choice and then stole second. Krislyn Wilder reached on an Eagle error, which allowed Fisher to cross home plate and tie the game. Rylan Ivey then sliced a single to the outfield and sprinted home on a Reagan Garrett opposite-field double to right, putting Chapman in front by a 2-1 margin. “I think it's about setting in,” said Chapman head coach Casey Green. “It takes them a bit. Just coming out and hitting the ball, being patient, and staying through it gives them a lot of confidence.” Chapman loaded the bases with one out in the fourth on a Samantha McPhail single, Madison Manning walk, and a Hailey Coley bunt single along the third base line. Fisher drilled a double to left, which plated both McPhail and Manning. Coley also scored on the play following an error, which made for a four-run Panther advantage. Krislyn Wilder worked a walk and swiped second, putting two more runners in scoring position. Garrett drove in both runs with a single to left, creating a 7-1 Chapman lead. Chesnee continued to battle in the fifth inning as Loren Potter and Abby Fogle reached on a base hit and free pass, respectively, that put two runners aboard with two out. However, a strikeout brought the frame to a close. “The defense this year has been different, but it’s been effective,” Garrett remarked. “We have figured out how to work around and fix gaps. Going back into region play, this (game) gives me a lot of confidence and motivation to pitch with a defense that is helping me.” Jada Sellars reached second in the sixth on a one-out Panther error but was left stranded following a strikeout and groundout. Conversely, Fisher led off the Chapman sixth with a double to center and later scored on a wild pitch, which provided the final margin. “The team staying calm (defensively) is showing that they’re maturing,” Green stated. “Rae (Garrett) being in the circle helps that. She can place her pitches and try to direct the ball to where we want it to go, and it settles things down.” For Chapman, Fisher was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs batted in, and three runs scored. Garrett was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in, while Ivey and McPhail each went 1-for-3. Coley also was 1-for-1 with a walk and run scored. In the circle, Garrett limited the Eagles to one run on two hits while striking out four batters. A solid showing on the mound and some late insurance paved the way as Chapman claimed an 8-2 victory over the Centurions.
Chapman struck in the first inning as Hudson Moss reached on a leadoff single and sprinted home on a Bryson Cothran opposite-field double to right. One inning later, Chandler Cartee legged out an infield single on a bunt, which also allowed Lewis McAlister to score and create a 2-0 lead for the Panthers. Cothran also toed the slab for the Panthers and faced one over the minimum through the first two frames. However, the Centurions posed a big threat in the third inning by loading the bases on a dropped third strike. Broome’s Nathan Carpenter worked a bases-loaded walk, which scored David Inman and made it a 2-1 score. Cothran responded with a strikeout and a fly out to shortstop that halted the Centurion threat. “I was just thinking, ‘Don’t try to do too much,’” Cothran recalled about that inning. “‘You’ve got your team behind you. Let (Broome) hit the ball and see what (the defense) can do.’ Tonight, I just wanted to throw first pitch strikes, attack, and let my teammates make plays.” “I think Bryson would tell you that he didn’t have his best stuff tonight, but he competed,” Chapman head coach J.D. Goodwin said. “That is what we try to do as an entire team is to compete and you’re not always going to be at your best in this game. He battled and gave us five really good innings of one-run ball. You really can’t ask for much more than that, so I am super proud of him.” Back-to-back singles by Cartee and Colt McPeters, followed by a hit-by-pitch for Moss, put ducks on the pond for the Panthers in the fifth inning. Cartee crossed home plate on a passed ball, while Cole Daughterty smacked a two-RBI, opposite-field single to right that extended the lead to four. Two batters later, a Hank Tolleson RBI sacrifice bunt down the first base side scored Daughterty and created a 6-1 lead. In the sixth, Peyton Hodge sent a double to left field and scored when Moss launched an offering over the wall for a two-run homer, extending the Panther advantage to seven at that juncture of the contest. Cothran tossed five solid innings for Chapman, allowing one run on two hits while striking out five batters. Lawson Harris closed the game out on the mound for the Panthers, yielding an unearned run while also notching a strikeout. Daughterty (2-for-4) and Moss (2-for-3) each recorded two RBI and two runs scored, while Cartee was 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored. McPeters was also 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Panthers. “That actually bookended things for us, offensively,” stated Goodwin. “Daughterty had a huge two-RBI hit in a 2-1 ballgame that extended it to 4-1, and then Hudson went up 3-0 (in the count). We gave him the green light and he put a really good swing on it for a home run. Those were two big hits by our seniors right there.” Next up for Chapman (8-3, 3-0 Region) is a short trip over to Broome on Thursday, March 21st. The game is slated to begin at approximately 8:00 PM. INMAN, S.C. – Relentless.
Chapman women’s soccer coach Will Maley used that word to describe the Panthers’ attack in a Region 3-3A match against the Broome Centurions on Wednesday evening. In this contest, the Panthers struck early and pulled away for an 8-1 victory over the Centurions. At the four minute mark, Sarah Visoury followed a deflection off a corner kick and found the top left corner of the net from close in, staking the Panthers to a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, Elliot Miller found the bottom left corner on a shot from ten yards out and created a two goal advantage. “We set the tone,” Maley stated. “We worked on that in practice (on Monday). We worked on combination play(s) and putting the ball in the net. Obviously, we jumped up really quick, real fast and everything that we worked on in training this week came to fruition. That allowed us to ease the break on and work on the next level of what you need to fix.” Miller struck again in the twelfth minute as she worked her way behind a defender, sprinted down the middle of the field, and fired one past the keeper for a 3-0 advantage. Visoury lined up a shot on goal and scored in the 22nd minute from 13 yards out, extending the Panther lead once more. “We haven’t been able to come out that aggressive (on offense) in a while,” Miller admitted. “What really changed it was our formation because Sarah (Visoury) and Kaitlin (Salbaum) were able to make forward passes. Up front, we were not as afraid to take shots, so we took our chances, and it worked out. Nobody is selfish on the team, so a lot of people are not afraid to give up their shot if it means somebody else has a better shot, which means more people will have more goals.” In the last 15 minutes of the opening frame, Taryn Rogers and Kaitlin Salbaum both recorded their first goals of the evening in the 25th and 36th minutes, respectively, for a 6-0 lead at the break. Rogers started the second half with a goal from close range, while Salbaum fired one into the bottom right corner of the net for the Panthers. Broome’s Dakota Mitchell connected on a shot from 20 yards out in the 58th minute, as the shot curled just inside the right post for a Centurion goal, providing the final margin. Four Panthers – Miller, Rogers, Salbaum, and Visoury – each finished with two goals apiece. Rogers also registered a game-high three assists, while Miller added two of her own. Salbaum and Karolena Boyko each notched one assist as well. “We know that we have a relentless attack,” added Maley. “We know that we have players that can put the ball in the back of the net. It’s just a matter of if we can make that combination, that last play or that last ball, into a certain spot. That is really what we’re working on over the next couple of weeks, (along with) having the quality to finish in the final third.” Next up for Chapman (4-2, 2-0 Region) is a non-region match at Byrnes on Friday, March 22nd at 7 PM. The Panthers got a big night from shortstop Autumn Fisher, who was three of four at the plate getting three RBIs while also running two runs of her own. Chapman jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead after the first three innings as Paisleigh Smith scored a run in the second inning and Fisher scored from third base on a single by Hailey Coley in the third inning. The top of the fourth inning saw the Panthers erupt for six runs to take an 8-0 lead over the Centurions. Fisher added to the lead on the next at-bat when she singled to left field which allowed Addy Lawson to score from third base and put the Panthers ahead 4-0 over Broome. Krislyn Wilder followed Fisher with a walk putting runners at first and second bases before R Ivey doubled to centerfield scoring Fisher. Reagan Garrett added to the lead when she hit a double to centerfield scoring both Wilder and Ivey to push the lead to 7-0 over the Centurions. Wilder followed Fisher with a double to centerfield allowing Fisher to push the lead to 11-1 when she came home to score. The final run of the game was scored when Garrett singled down the first base line allowing Wilder to score putting the lead at 12-1 over Broome. Reagan Garrett continued her strong pitching in the bottom of the fifth inning to seal the game as she struck out one before getting the next two batters to hit into back-to-back lineouts to end the game. Garrett finished her night from the pitching circle going all five innings while allowing one run on two hits while striking out two batters. She also had a good night at the plate going two of four with three RBIs and a run scored. With the win the Panthers improve to 7-3 on the season and 1-0 in region play. They will return to action on Thursday in a home matchup against Chesnee with a gametime set for 7:30 PM. WOODRUFF, SC - While the Woodruff softball team jumped out to the first lead, it didn't take long for Chapman to respond and take control of the game as they went on to take a 10-4 road victory over the homestanding Wolverines.
A big part of the offensive output for the Panthers was from their leadoff hitter Krislyn Wilder who went three of five from the plate adding three RBIs along with a run scored. Woodruff got runs in the bottom of the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead before Chapman's offense got to work in the top of the fourth inning. Rylan Ivey started the inning off with double to centerfield before Reagan Garrett walked and Sophie Whitley singled to left field to load the bases with no outs. Ivey scored on a fielder's choice during the next at-bat to cut the Wolverines lead to 2-1 before a fly out to centerfield looked like it may allow Woodruff to hold their lead. With runners at first and second bases and two outs, Addy Lawson singled to centerfield allowing Whitley to score tying the game at 2-2 and after an attempted play at home allowed Lawson to advance to second base. Hailey Coley followed Lawson with a single up the middle scoring S McPhail from third base to give Chapman a 3-2 lead. Kenslie Edwards came to the plate after Coley working four pitch walk to once again load the bases. Krislyn Wilder got two of her game high three RBIs on the next at-bat as she hit a single to centerfield on a 2-2 count to bring home Lawson and Coley to give the Panthers a 5-2 lead after four innings of play. Chapman got back to work in the top of the fifth inning as Lawson and Coley both singled to start the inning as Lawson made it to third base on Coley's single. Lawson scored on the next at-bat as she raced home on a wild pitch to push the Panthers lead to 6-3 over Woodruff. Wilder made the score 7-3 in favor of Chapman when she hit a line drive to left field that allowed Coley to score from third base after moving there on the same wild pitch that allowed Lawson to score in the previous at-bat. Garrett singled to left field allowing Wilder to score and make the game 8-3 in favor of the Panthers and allowing Ivey to advance to third base before scoring on the next at-bat when Whitley singled to left field making the score 9-3 over the Wolverines. In the top of the seventh inning the Panthers added to their lead when Paisleigh Smith, who had walked earlier in the inning, scored from second base on a single to centerfield by Ivey making the score 10-3 in favor of the Panthers. Woodruff added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as Chapman took the 10-4 victory for their third win in a row. Reagan Garrett picked up the win for the Panthers from the pitching circle as she pitched all seven innings allowing three earned runs on eight hits while striking out six batters. Eight of the nine spots in the batting order for the Panthers either scored a run or recorded an RBI against the Wolverines on Thursday night. With the win the Panthers improve to 4-1 on the young season and as of publishing are scheduled to be playing in a tournament hosted by Byrnes at the Middle Tyger River Park in Reidville on Friday and Saturday. INMAN, S.C. – On Wednesday evening, the Chapman Panthers baseball team took the field against the Hillcrest Rams as the two sides wrapped up a home-and-home series. The Panthers took control early on and pulled away for a 12-2 victory over the Rams in six innings, sweeping both meetings in the regular season.
Right-hander Caleb Stauffeneker set the tone on the mound for Chapman by retiring the first six Ram batters in order over the first two innings, which included three strikeouts in a row (all looking). In the bottom of the first, a Hudson Moss double and Cole Daughterty walk set the table for a big inning. Kole Brown smacked the first pitch he saw to left field, which allowed Moss to score. Daughterty touched home plate on the play by way of a Ram error. Hank Tolleson reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a Lewis McAlister opposite-field single to left. In the second Peyton Hodge singled and later sprinted home on a Moss sacrifice fly to center, creating a 4-0 Panther lead through two frames. “We try to be really balanced and be able to manufacture one through nine (in the order),” said Chapman head coach J.D. Goodwin. “We take a lot of pride in that. Our guys have bought into what we want to do offensively, and they are doing a phenomenal job. We scored in five out of six innings that we played tonight and had 14 hits. In six innings, you’ve got a chance to score some runs when you do that.” Hillcrest got on the board with a two-run Alex LaCoste double in the third, cutting the deficit down to a 4-2 margin. Chapman countered in their third turn at the plate as Hodge scored on a Colt McPeters double. Later, McPeters made a mad dash home on a free pass to Moss when ball four missed the mark and went to the backstop. Two batters later, Brown sent an RBI single to left that drove in Moss and extended the Chapman lead to 8-2. Carson Seymour got the call from the bullpen and tossed two scoreless innings in relief for the Panthers, yielding only a single hit to the Rams. Stauffeneker earned the win with four solid innings of work, holding the Rams to two runs on four hits while compiling six strikeouts. “What a fantastic outing by (Stauffeneker),” Goodwin exclaimed. “He really commanded the strike zone early. He ran into a little trouble there late in his fourth inning (of work), but he beared down and made a big pitch to get out of the inning. I’m super proud of him for battling through in a tough spot. It all starts on the mound, and he gave us a great start.” “I’m really proud of Carson. He is a senior that has stepped up and really found a role as a middle reliever that we can go to, and we trust to throw strikes, and give us a chance. It was an excellent job by him tonight. The pitching was great all around to hold (Hillcrest) to two runs.” Bryson Cothran led off the sixth inning for the Panthers with an opposite-field triple to the right field corner and crossed home plate on a Tolleson base knock to left. Lawson Harris and Clay Justus followed suit with base hits of their own, putting ducks on the pond with two outs. Tolleson and Harris both came around to score on a Ram error, which provided the final margin of victory and ended the contest by mercy rule. Brown was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Tolleson (four runs scored) and McPeters each tallied two hits in three at-bats. Cothran went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Hodge (two runs scored), McAlister (RBI single), and Moss (double, RBI) each went 1-for-3. Nine out of 11 total batters for the Panthers recorded at least one hit. Next up for Chapman (4-1) is a return to Region 3-3A play on Tuesday at home against the Broome Centurions at approximately 7:30 PM. INMAN, S.C. – Tuesday marked the start of Region 3-3A play as the Chapman Panthers softball team faced the Carolina Trojans in a doubleheader. The Panthers took care of business on their homefield, coming away with a pair of 15-0 victories over the Trojans.
In game one, Chapman struck for eight runs in their first cuts at the plate. Krislyn Wilder drew a leadoff walk and scored on Rylan Ivey’s two-run home run to left-center. Reagan Garrett and Sophie Whitley followed suit with back-to-back solo home runs. Sam McPhail and Madison Manning each drew a walk and later scored on an Alexis Floyd two-run double. Hailey Coley also drew a free pass and scored on a Garrett groundout, which created an 8-0 lead after one inning. The Panthers tacked on three runs in the second and four more in the third to provide the final margin. “It helps with confidence,” Chapman head coach Casey Green said about the contributions throughout the lineup. “Being able to hit the ball and do what they want to with the pitch (is key). Anytime you can hit the ball far and hard, it builds confidence.” During game two, the Panthers scored 13 runs in the opening frame. Sophie Whitley and Addy Lawson each recorded a hit and scored a run, while Manning hit a triple to left-center and later scored. Krislyn Wilder hit a three-run shot to right-center, which also brought home Paisleigh Smith and Coley. Lawson also added an RBI bases-loaded walk. Alexis Floyd tossed three perfect innings for the Panthers in game one, compiling seven strikeouts on the night. Smith did the same in the second game, as she retired eight out of nine Trojan batters faced on strike. “Alexis is going to be our backup (pitcher) to Rae (Garrett),” Green added. “For Paisleigh, it is important for her to build some confidence, being able to throw strikes, and trying to locate better to have an impact in closer games.” Floyd went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI in the first game, while Ivey was 1-for-2 with three RBI. In game two, Wilder was 2-for-2 with three RBI, while Manning was 1-for-1 with a triple, two walks, two RBI, and two runs scored. DUNCAN, S.C. – A season ago, the Byrnes Rebels and Chapman Panthers softball teams both made deep playoff runs in their respective classifications. On Monday evening, the two clubs collided in a non-region matchup.
When the dust settled, it was the Rebels who came away with an 8-2 win over the Panthers. Trailing by a run in the third, Autumn Fisher scorched a two-out double off the third base bag and into the left field corner. Fisher advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Krislyn Wilder single. Reagan Garrett then smacked an RBI single to the right-center field wall, allowing Wilder to score from first for a 2-1 Panther lead. Byrnes answered in their half of the frame by loading the bases on three infield singles in succession. Kaylee Hannon drove in two runs with a single through the left side and advanced on the throw to home plate, which put the Rebels ahead by a two-run margin. Hannon added a two-run blast to left in the fourth, which created a 7-2 lead for Byrnes at that juncture of the contest. For Chapman, Wilder and Garrett each went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI apiece. Fisher, Rylan Ivey, and Samantha McPhail each tallied a hit as well for the Panthers.
