Spartanburg Day And Union Set For Matchup After Both Win On Day Two Of Chesnee Roundball Classic12/22/2021
CHESNEE, S.C. – After a tough loss on the first day of the Chesnee Roundball Classic, Gregg Nibert and the Spartanburg Day Griffins looked to quickly rebound on Wednesday afternoon against the Blacksburg Wildcats.
On this day, it was the Griffins that got off to a strong start in the first quarter, which allowed them to pick up a wire-to-wire 37-28 victory over the Wildcats. Spartanburg Day opened the contest by uncorking a 10-0 run across the opening frame, with six of those points coming from Don Douglass. Blacksburg clawed their way back into the game with an 8-1 run over a 2:15 span in the second quarter, cutting the deficit down to three with 2:30 left until intermission. The Griffins answered with a 7-0 run, which added up to a 10 point advantage at the break. Douglass finished with a game-high 14 points for Spartanburg Day, while Landon Hames led Blacksburg with nine points. GAME SIX – Union County 81, York 62 Union County jumped out to a scorching lead in this contest. Qaua Kershaw, Connor Earls, and Ty Jeter each scored six points in the first quarter, staking the Yellow Jackets to a 22-17 advantage. The Yellow Jackets created separation between themselves and the Cougars in the second stanza by tallying 20 points as a team. Kershaw dominated the frame by notching 10 of Union County’s points. Union County was led by Kershaw with a game-high 27 points, along with 10 points from Kevon Hughes. Zy Brown paced York with a team-high 22 points, followed by Joel Strait with 15 and Jabin Strait with 10 points, respectively. On Thursday afternoon in the consolation bracket, York will clash with Blacksburg at 3 PM.
