CHESNEE, S.C. – The Catawba Ridge Copperheads and Spartanburg Day Griffins had the honors of opening tournament play on Tuesday afternoon at the 2021 Chesnee Roundball Classic.
A double-digit advantage for the Copperheads suddenly shrank to a single point, but Catawba Ridge managed to escape with a 49-46 victory over Spartanburg Day. With five minutes left in regulation, the Griffins – led by head coach Gregg Nibert – found themselves trailing the Copperheads by a 39-28 margin. Moments later, a Hugh Converse triple helped Spartanburg Day find some footing and led to an 18-8 stretch over a four minute and 55 second span. That strong run cut the Catawba Ridge lead down to 47-46 with five seconds to play. Spartanburg Day was forced to foul and Grant Lovette knocked down a pair of free throws to help secure the victory for the Copperheads. Lovette finished with a game-high 18 points. The Griffins were led by Caleb Banks with 11 points, along with 10 points from Don Douglass. Fort Mill 55 Blacksburg 30 - Game Two In the second game on Tuesday afternoon the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead and never looked back defeating Blacksburg 55-30. Fort Mill grabbed a 13-5 lead in the first quarter with a strong defensive effort but saved their best for the second quarter limiting the Wildcats to two points in the quarter for a 26-7 halftime lead. Kyle Neibch led the Yellow Jackets with 18 points and was followed closely by Gabe Tooper who finished the game with 17 points. Jacob Gilfillan led Blacksburg with eight points in the game. Spartanburg Day will play the Blacksburg Wildcats at 3 PM on Wednesday afternoon. Catawba Ridge will face Fort Mill at 7:30 PM, marking the fourth time the two clubs have faced one another this season. The first three meetings between the Copperheads and Yellow Jackets have each been decided by three points or less. Comments are closed.
